I've heard this UMA thing the announcer says on MAX and MAX 2. What does it mean? Anyone?

Two theories. One is there is something like a rumor of the supposed best player ever or something going by UMA... (I dunno, I think he really sucked or something like that) but I don't buy it.

My personal guess is that it's something like the equivalent of UFO. Ever watched the BGs for some of the 6th and 7th mix songs? They have one particular one that goes:

UFO -> UMA (switches from one to the other, it might be in the reverse order). Also, some of you may remember from earlier DDR mixes, if you did extremely well, I can't remember if it was the grading screen of 2nd mix or in game in 3rd, but I think the announcer said "Are you an alien?"

Hey, it's only a guess, but I think it makes sense. It could be alien or something, I dunno...

UMA stands for Unidentified Mysterious Animal - said by the announcer in DDR MAX

I suppose it's been officially confirmed or something.

If you check the 5th Mix Internet Rankings, you will indeed see UMA up there. As far as I've been informed, one of the then top players in Japan took UMA as the scoretag/nickname. Unidentified Mysterious Animal "UMA" (And I always thought it was just pronounced Uma, one word, when I first had 3rd Mix Home) is a selectable character on some of the earlier Japanese home versions...

Searching through the threads/checking out the dictionary, would have saved you time.

And would have saved my time locking this.
