i was in band for a good 4 or 5 years, and was first chair clarinet for 2 of em. though for the life of me, i could not read music worth a damn. i did however, own at memorizing my music, and used the sheet music as a guide for memorizing. the only thing i used it for was what i may not have memorized like volume or whatever. i would do better with playing it by listening to the piece then i would just reading it.

Ditto, except for me it was piano, instead of clarinet. I seriously could not sight-play at all, but I could memorize the song good... but that wasnt always the best thing, I could have played minuet in G major in my sleep, but I couldnt just play one part, I had to play the whole song becasue thats the way I learned it.

I also was in Choir this year, that was pretty fun, even though Choir 2 did get most of the good songs in the concerts, and we were left with the easy crappy songs. Ah well, being in choir had nothing to do with me and ddr, I just wanted to sing.

Seeing as how I'm in a high school choir myself, I would assume so. Been to any competitions lately?

New Jersey. The last competition we went to was the ACDA All-Superior Festival in Maryland a few months ago.

ahh... our choir doesn't really leave New England or the region for competitions:(

But come to think of it, this April we went to perform at Universal and I think I remember (possibly) a choir from New Jersey competing against us.. any chance it might have been you guys?

I was in regular band until 9th grade... I decided marching was not for me, so I tried out for our Honor's Jazz Ensemble... and made that... played first chair Tenor Saxophone for the last two years of High school(graduated in 2002). Improv was my life, until I got DDRMax for Japanese PS2 when it came out. Then school was over, and so was my band carreer.. unfortunately. ;_; But, I use DDR and beatmania IIDX to keep the music flowing inside me.

I definitely think that being a skilled musician helps with overall music game skill. If you narrowed in on rhythm at a younger age, it's much more natural when you step up to a game to get good scores.

A group of my friends plays DDR. A few of them (including the best one) are involved in band. I am in the high school musicals my school holds. I don't know if that helps any. I think the biggest thing that helped me catch on, though, was my experience from Frequency. For those of you who don't know, Frequency is a game for PS2 in which you use the shoulder buttons to "capture" notes. When I was first introduced to DDR, I'd already become pretty good at Frequency, even though now I suck. I think DDR ruined my Frequency skills <sigh>.

I really think a previous musical background does help people to learn the game more quickly, but in the long run, I think everyone has the same potential.[/code]

I'm in chorus, but I'm only a moderate player. I will say that learning to feel the beat in chorus helped

I've been jazz/rock drumming for going on ten years.

And people wonder why I was able to beat the poopy out of nine/ten footers after only three months. I didn't really have to learn anything new - a LOT of drumming skills just transfered over to my DDR playing. Can any other drummers comment on this?

I played piano between the ages of seven and fourteen, violin from eight to sixteen, and a failed stint on trumpet for, like, one month when I was thirteen. I was in chorus for middle school and high school, and in orchestra (usually second, third or fourth chair) for the same.

It still took me ages to do well in DDR. :P

Heh... well, I am not a drummer(though, I was a jazz musician), and I too was able to beat the shit out of 9/10 footers after about two months. Maybe less... I caught on reallllly quickly. Of course, at the arcade it was a different story. Took me like 6 months from when I started to finally clear Max300 at the arcade. Stamina is a sucky thing. Finger/note reading wise, though, 9-10 footers were doable for me rather quickly.

I'm sure that your prior drumming skills were the reason you rock out on DDR like you do. Understanding the music behind the steps is what makes the difference between a AAA and a AA... Also, being able to keep a steady beat before coming into DDR helps a lot too... I'm still working on that. My brain is too anxious to get everything done, so I, naturally, rush often.... or think about rushing, and slow down too much... or something ridiculous like that.

While I am one of the ONLY people in my HS that DDRs. (Im in DFW also. I go to Northwest.) The people that have gone with me and seen me play have tried it and ive noticed that the sense of rhythm and skill was in those that were also in marching band/band while the people who werent in it just plain sucked happy.gif;

i was in band for 3 qtr's in 6th grade, i quit cause i was tooo busy, I played clarinet....

and then our band teacher commited suicide, never had the chance to play clarinet again in 7th or 8th grade, and then in 9th i was not into it,

i was never into it, i just played for no reason, and then in 10th i got into ddr and took me 5 months to beat a 9 footer, but i think that's prolly really slow huh?

different subject! I know a cheerleader who SUX at ddr, she tried it and she SUCKED. and then i know another cheerleader who can beat max 300 and maxX unlimited!

My theory is that Tap-Dancing Drummers will start out with the best advantage in DDR.

I am just entering HS and joined band in grade school, practicing snare drum once a week. Now I play bass drum on a marching band, and in concert I play all sorts of percussion knickknacks. I don't know if it has enhanced my performance on DDR, but I just passed into double-digit cata passes a short while ago, just after a band concert. I'll let you make the call biggrin.gif

Did any of you choir people go to the Pacific Rim Children's Chorus Festival a couple of years ago?
