ah, east coast freestylers, like what.... um, really, i've seen alot of crummy east coast freestyle, but it's gettin better!
it's important to watch and study others freestyling on the machine as well, watch their feet and how the move to the arrows, incorporating normal dance moves into the steps of the game, you can teach yourself to move better. (not that i'm all great, but i'm getting better.)
most of all is to keep your cool, alot of people start feeling pressure and tense up, and tensing up is horrible when yer trying to stay loose for some moves. _________________

I know I probably shouldn't be saying it. But my freestyle is based solely on competetion. I don't freestyle anywhere near as serious as I would in a tournament than during regular play. I might fool around with a gap or something, that's about it though.
Though, then again I don't think a good freestyle can come solely from the machine. Practicing at home, with a mirror is great. DWI autoplay is great. Videos are great. And all of that is free. _________________

That's exactly what I'm trying to do. though I don't have mirror at home to use. Actually I do in the bathroom.. but it's small and doing large body movements is a no can do. I just go out more and use my reflection of an empty store. All those things you said are great.

Well large body motions you can figure out what they look like after practice. Basically, if it feels right, there's a good chance that it is.
I have a mirror that is located on a door to my bathroom. I have to adjust it just enough so can see my body in a big open space that I can move in. So, instead of doing a set up. I figure out what the thing will be without it.
But this isn't to say practicing without the machine is the best. I will suggest that you do your routine on a machine (even if it isn't playing) once or twice. Just to make sure you remember everything. There haven been plenty of times where I came up to the machine, and forgotten half the routine just because the atmosphere was different. You don't have to do the full motion of the freestyle. Just make notes and small motions. _________________

Whats the move when you jump to up and right, then you squat down and hit left and down with your hands called, and how do you do it?! I keep fallin on my butt trying to get that down... Do you push up with your toes when you lean back? Thats the closest I can come to it...
Thanks!

It's just a double hand plant. On the fall, stretch your arms out. Once you hit the arrow, lean back a bit and then push forward and then use your knees to get up. _________________

there are more ways, like breakdancing is possible, from which I can see from Strictly Business from an A-Team video (I know, they suck), plus using the bar to help you jump out and back in from Dynamite Rave Basic and Trick by Naoki (mostly, I think it fits in well with Trick mode), and the beginning part where it's possible to spin on Light. I need to know more about freestyling, I'm just a newcomer in DDR freestyling so I don't know much yet. Also, get over it when a crowd says anything that you don't like, or do like while you freestyle. You'll feel nervous the very first day, but eventually you'll see that you like it that way. Plus plajarizing moves are sometimes ok, but there are times where it's not also. Just be yourself, be happy, and Dance With The Beat |

If you are from the East Coast, come to the WTF (watch the freestyle) Gathering. You'll see some good stuff there. Link is in my sig.
And I think the freestyle in the Tristate is pretty close in comparison to anywhere else you might think is good. _________________

for the people who are scared of being called a biter or copycat. Don't worry about it. Just don't completely copy someone else's style. In the beginning, if you don't bite...you starve.
I developed my dance style from poppin, lockin, and bboying. Lil bit of raving too. IMO, I have some of the more impressive tricks in the business. For instance:
-Grab left foot with right arm keeping left foot on ground
-Put right leg through the hole that was made and go down to james's brown splits (splits with one leg bent)
Its easier for me to make tricks and moves since I bboy and pop. But its hard to place in tourneys at times because popping has been done A LOT. With respect to Liustyle and 8-ball of course. I can barely hang with the freestylers in cali. I have to put all my effort into a routine if I were to compete out there. I hope to do that one day. Hopefully there is a CBN 3 and I'll be down there fo sho.

After researching my previous freestyle performances, I have found out the main problem on why I'm not placing high anymore like I was before. Whenever I freestyle, I always seem to look at my feet, and not the crowd. Are there any tips to breaking this habit that I can use? If I can break this habit, I will be back on the top of Freestyle. _________________

Look at the crowd, make like you are dancing solely for them. Like if you were having a conversation with the people and you don't want to be rude by not look at their faces. _________________

Here's a little constructive criticism, of course... don't take it to the heart, it's just something that I noticed from watching all your freestyles when we were competing against each other.
Don't worry so much as to hit all the correct arrows... style is much more important in a freestyling competition (who the hell knows why people include PA score in a fs comp.) Being fluid, confident, and relaxed (unless stiff is a part of your routine) add much to the score.
I too noticed that I used to look at my feet a lot, I broke this habit by doing routines with my eyes closed with my face forward of course... then I focus on a certain spot when performing at home when I become familiar with doing my routine with my eyes closed; so the next thing I do is stare at once place (i.e. my couch); after awhile, not looking at your feet just becomes a habit. _________________

Thus why I can never be a routined freestyler. Facing the crow just ain't doin' it for me. If only improv'in were more popular in these parts. _________________

Since the videos are down for now, doez anyone know where else I can find good freestyling videos to watch? I've always wanted to FS, but I can't seem to manage to dance and play at the same time... Also, I'm lookin for the old Dam Dariram FS Kevin Kim did a while back, it's still one of my favorites ever! |
