Kakmuei
heavy: 9 feet
oni: 8 feet
Sakura
heavy: 10 feet
oni: 9 feet
I'm sure there are more examples, but these are the only ones I've seen.
Aren't the steps supposed to get harder as you move up in difficulty? Just something I thought I'd share. |

Just because it is oni, it doesn't mean it is harder.
It's just a different difficulty.
To clarify, Oni could be easier that standard. Oni is a seperate type of steps. _________________

Think of it this way.
The "Oni" Kakumei steps are from Max2, for the "One More Extra Stage!" if you AAed MaxX Unlimited. It's on sudden death, as well as other modifiers, so if you miss so much as one step, you're dead.
The same for Dance Dance Revolution Oni, which is on something like 3X, but I am sure there's debate on which is harder.
As for Sakura, it first appears in RevenG New-Revenge as the final stage, and is on Oni for that reason. It was still difficult for some to sight-read FC or Oni-pass it when you can't play it as a regular stage. But at the same time, not anywhere near as difficult as Sakura Heavy. _________________

Oh, ok, I was refering to normal play, like... V oni is harder than V heavy, A oni is harder then A heavy, and Daikenkai oni is harder then Daikenkai heavy, I just thought the oni/challenge steps would be harder than the regular heavy steps. I was not refering to oni courses, just oni steps for songs. |

That could also be another reason why, besides Sakura being first shown on RevenG New-Revenge. Remember, Konami has been known to end up leaving bits and pieces of scrapped ideas on their DDR arcade kits.
People who've cracked the CDs have found plenty of leftover data before, like songs which never made cuts to both arcade and home versions. _________________

Remember Max 2? Back then "Challenge Mode" songs can only be accessed via playing Oni courses, even when everything is unlocked. Due to the unique circumstances of having to learn steps for a "new" song with the pressure of the 3 bar high upon you, the difficulty of these songs are usually easier than their "original" version.
It is only until Extreme that Challenge Mode steps can be played in normal game mode. Still, they're designed to be played in Challenge Mode, and so difficulties isn't really the issue here; it's the purpose it serves in the game that really matters here.
Sakura Oni is being played at 0.5x in an Oni course. Dance Dance Revolution Oni is the One More Extra stage for Extreme. Both have valid reasons for them to be easier than their Heavy steps.
Besides, Dance Dance Revolution HAS to reuse steps from all the other Naoki songs, including 8 footers like B4U and AM-3P. That drags the difficulty down a bit- but not that much. _________________
