I have and always will find the arcade pads more stable, accurate, and enjoyable than the home version pads, be they hard or soft.

Question: for smaller, lighter players, is it easier to do freeze arrows on a home pad or the arcade? A few kids (and even some lighter teenagers) have trouble doing freeze arrows on the DDR MAX 2 machine at my arcade.

I have heard (I think from Red Octane's website) that the home pads register freeze arrows by pressure or weight, where the arcade pads register freezes by the opposite. Since I only play in the arcade (BTW I am fairly small and very light for 13 [only 85 pounds]) and maybe once or twice on my friend's pad after I started, I have always shifted my weight for freeze arrows (which seems to work fine at the arcade). I do find trouble, however, when I do one freeze arrow, then another one (Candy* on light, for example). I sometimes lose the first arrow, while this has never happened on my friends pad. I will be getting my own soft pads soon, so if anything is different, I will post about it.

I find the arcade better because I get to hang out with my friends and I have fun!

I cant stand home playing .. maybe because I dont have decent pads, but they move way to much for me. I can do EE no problem at the arcade, but I cant pass it at home. Although for some reason I cant pass Orion Civi at the arcade but I can at home .. I think if I had some nice CFs or something at home I would pick home. Because its hard to impress people when there are so many insane players in my area who just pop of the hard 9's and 10's like they are easy. People dont often notice the guy who can get a nice combo going on most every song or just barely pass difficult rythem 9's.

Even though, I own a Cobalt Flux with a psx->usb adapter, and hundreds of songs...

I still prefer playing at the arcade versus at home. Why? Because it's not just the game, it's the atmosphere. You meet people, they become your friends, you hang out with them. It's a social thing, it's competitive. Who else can you compete against (or show off to) at home.

Oh and on the thing with the freeze arrows. I have a tad bit of trouble holding them at the arcade. This is because the pads are okayish and don't respond very well. If I shift my weight a bit, I usually lose them. (I play tip toed) Sometimes even I will put my foot flat footed for freeze arrows, so I can put my pressure down. As for at home, I have no trouble with freezes because my Cobalt Flux is very sensitive and I take good care of it.

I agree much with that.

I started out playing at home on a pretty deace pad and the first time I went to an arcade I was just like, "Splooge in my pants" and continue to feel that way every time I go. The pads aren't really better, despite what everyone says. I have played on perfect condition pads at arcades and they are no better than my soft pad at home, but the machine itself just kicks buttocks and having a cheering crowd is so boss. There is no feeling like having 20 or 30 people* cheering for me and my friend playing catas in an arcade.

ARCADE PWNS!

*note: this is pretty easy to get going since I live in Wisconsin

I agree, alot of chicks dig watching and that makes me have even more fun in the arcade, well um uh... thats whole-nother thread. As for at home, its better when you put the pad on a hard surface.

i don't own my own home pad....yet! But i have played over a friend's and he has a metal (which i am gettgin cuz i'm not dealing with the plastics that don't feel right) As for the arcade you can't beat the oringial unless you desgin your own arcade pad. But it's not just the pad that makes people like the arcade better. It's that the machine has better songs, more songs, and many other things that just place it over a home television.

Both have their distinct advantages/disadvantages for me. I use them to complement each other. At home, it's easier for me to get practice in on those difficult songs so I don't have to burn tokens, or if I don't feel like going anywhere. Arcade is the application of what I've learned or practiced; also to meet people. Am not exactly the type to draw attention to myself, but DDR tends to get people to notice me at least a little bit. Now if only that attractive blonde watching me a couple weeks ago wasn't married... frust.gif

to me, it doesn't really matter, but I like the arcades more because there is a crowd that is watching you play, so yeah. Home versions can be boring at times unless you have alot of DDR friends in your house, the that's a different story. I really like the arcade sized pads better though. Soft pads are nothing compared to the real official arcade DDR metal pads.

I like arcades better. The pads are very accurate when fixed up and stuff.
Although I've never played on a Cobalt Flux I still say arcades are better because you get something around that quality without having to buy something so expensive.

Crowds are a plus too so I'm going with arcades all the way.

Not always, at my arcade the DDR machine is on a raised platform and the pads a little lower, so that cant be the problem.

I like the arcade a lot better than at home. One big point, is that if you are using a soft pad at home that you bought with your own money, you're going to want to take care of it and not want to wear it out as fast, so people like me actually try not to play as fiercely at the arcade, thus doing worse at home. Lol, but when I'm at a machine, I don't care one bit about the pad messing up (they have great durabality anyway), so I do better there. It's a little bit of a psychological thing. @_@ But my home experience does screw me up, as my aiming for the arrows is occasionally off at the arcade. This CAN be a big problem for someone who has played at home for a while and first trying the arcade. I am pro arcade!

Out of the total of 30 or so arcades I've played at, all of the arrows are alightly lower than the pad.

you'd think they could put some REALLY high quality speakers in it (like bose or something)

<rant>

Bose are complete garbage. Don't be such a media whore and believe the hype around some over-priced garbage company. I could care less if you don't know much about home audio, but it's people who tout Bose as a high quality product just piss me off to no end.

People who say Bose speakers are good have probably never critically listened to a pair of speakers, and/or compared them to a higher quality (although similary priced) brand. Bose spends the majority of it's money on advertisment, and I guess it's worked to some extent. However, the build quality of Bose speakers is simply horrible.
