Yeah, all ddr players are druggies who get high listening to techno and trance all day long, 24/7/365 blink.gif

In all seriousness though, i wrote that guy an email sharing my comments, heres some of it if y'all wanna read:

I wrote:
There are 3 things i do agree with you. DDR is a revolutionary game, it did revive arcade popularity, and it is incredibly popular. The rest...well i'll go point by point with your argument.

First off, no offense to your writing skills, but the whole rant had an extremely biased and incindiery tone (of course, since it was a rant). Your arguments had quite a bit of emotion rather than logic behind them, and you were trying to make all DDR players seem to be drugged out kids that exist to cause problems. I can understand this because like i said, it is a rant, but an argument carries more weight if it is backed by logic and evidence rather than pure emotion.

Now to my little piece:
First off, you say that you were amazed that such an overwhelmingly stupid game became so popular. However: did you try it? I am reminded of people saying they dont like a certain kind of food because they've never actually had it. I know for a fact that humans in general tend to resist change, i.e. be afraid/closed to new, different things. If you tried ddr sometime, you might not think it was so bad. However, you probably just now said to yourself "uh, duh, i would think it was just as retarded as ever". Thus proving my point.

Secondly, you seem to associate drugs and DDR quite a bit. Now i'm not quite sure where you got the idea that all DDR players, for that matter all people who listen to trance and techno are druggies. I for one am a big fan of trance and techno, and i play DDR, and i am in no way a druggie. I can also vouch for literally thousands of people that they are just like me. And DDR is by no means dancing, I and just about every single DDR player out there will willingly tell you that. I mean come on, if I saw someone at a concert or a club stomping the ground like that, i'd question their sanity.

Third, dance tournaments are no stupid than say Quake tournaments, or Counterstrike tournaments, or Street fighter tournaments, etc. If i were to use the same mentality as i see you have to DDR tournaments, i could go to a LAN party and say omg! these people are absolute retards, pounding on keyboards pretending they are killing each other and calling it fun. I'm not even gonna try it cause its stupid. The thing is, people like to do what they like with other people. People like to play quake, cs, street fighter, tekken, etc against other people and compare skill. People also do the same with DDR, as it is apparently so popular.

Fourth, the home version of DDR is in no way as bad as you make it out to be. It is quite fun. It keeps (the indefinite) you from spending money at the arcades all the time, and provides enjoyment for fans of that game. The music need not be loud, there are no, repeat no drug images in the game whatsoever (i dont know why you think there was....if you would only try it you would see what i mean.) DDR is by no means as mindless as you would make it out to be, which i will now discuss.

Fifth, DDR is a good mental and physical workout. Before you say "hey now, that game is just arrow mashing, wheres the physical and mental workout?!", let me explain. First of all, if you watch someone playing the very hard songs, you will quickly notice they are breathing very heavy and sweating a good deal. DDR just so happens to be a great cardiovascular exercise. The movements are constant on harder songs, and the amount of exercise achieved actually exceeds running (if you do not believe me, the home versions of DDR have workout modes that track amount of calories burned based on weight and songs played). In addition, playing DDR develops agility and flexiblilty (if you do not believe me, try stepping forward and then back 10 times in a second....that is required for one of the hardest songs in the game, for a prolonged lenght of time.)

Ok, now mental: reading arrows and stepping on arrows seems INCREDIBLY mindless to the casual observer. It seems like a great waste of time. However: if you take the BPM of one of the hardest songs in the game, 300 bpm, and take a constant stream of 1/8th note steps, your brain has to process 10 arrows and convert them into foot movements in one second. 1/10 of a second is about how long it takes your body to send the appropriate signals back and forth, so that leaves just about 0.00 seconds to process the arrow into a movement. People who play DDR can do this because DDR teaches people to better recognize patterns, to improve reaction time (which is always useful, for example in driving) and mental calculation.

Sixth, DDR was ported all over to different systems because it is popular, and people can make a buck from developing and selling the games. This makes many people happy, because few people have all systems on the market, and many people want home DDR.

Seventh, you ask why the pad cant be a pad with a bunch of sensors. I dont quite understand what you mean, because that is exactly what it is: there are 4 lucite panels over sheet metal for the arrows, with 4 pressure sensors under each arrow. You step, the machine gets feedback, checks the timing of the step, and grades the step accordingly.

Eight, you say how stupid it is for people to buy shoes for DDR. Well heres something to think about: have you ever tried running a mile in sandals, or skechers, or some other casual/formal kind of shoe? It really is painful. Now i think "official ddr shoes" would be a bad idea, but it is generally a good idea to play the game wearing running shoes, since they provide support for the heel and toe regions and absorb the shock. I mean, if people didnt wear sports shoes for DDR, they could severely injure their knees, legs, ankles, and backs.

Ninth, if you are so pissed about getting DDR fansite when searching for DDR memory (and well you should be, i absolutely hate when i'm trying to find something on google and get hundreds of hits that are of no importance to me) you should try searching for "double data rate memory", or go to computer retail/wholesale websites like newegg.com

Dont have a cow, man, its just a game E1.gif

I sent this:

Quote:
Mr. Crayfish:
I apologize for not having a more informal name to call you by but I suppose this will do given the circumstances. I'm sending this e-mail to you with regards to your recent rant on one of my favorite games, DDR, or Dance Dance Revolution as I'm sure you'd prefer to call it (http://dragunfyre.com/rants/ddrev.html). Now I'm all for ranting, I enjoy ranting quite a bit myself, but this bothered me a bit.
First of all, your "research" on DDR was rather shallow, while you made it seem in your rant that you actually took time to investigate the game. This is shown because if you would have even checked a songlist for DDR Extreme you would've noticed that the only song on there from any recognizable "pop" artist would be "the reflex" by Duran Duran. "Livin' La Vida Loca" is a cover by an artist on the "Dancemania" series of albums, which is featured throughout the DDR series. Almost all of the licensed tracks on DDR come from that series. The rest of the songs are in fact made specifically for the game. Hence the official sound tracks.
Second, you applied all kinds of sweeping generalizations to DDR. "I am not going to take my advice from some drug-happy nurses riding syringes". The nurse syringe animation is exclusively from the solo 2000 version of DDR, a rather rare version that is hard to find now a days. And I'm sure that if you'd actually seen the animation instead of reading some biased article from the news you'd agree that it in no way looks sexual at all. I hardly think leaning on a giant syringe constitutes "riding". After this you decided to lend random sexual undertones to DDR Disney mix. I assure you if you play the game you will see none of that.
Third, you try to imply that you are against DDR because it presents a sexually related image to children, then go on to say that one of the two times dancing in front of a computer is acceptable involves girls and webcams. Yeah, I can see you are the pinnacle of morals in society today. You're my idol let me tell ya.
Fourth, have you ever even spoken to someone who likes the game to hear an opposing view? Actually, let me rephrase that, have you talked to someone who is actually good at the game to hear an opposing view? I don't think anyone with the slightest amount of skill at DDR will tell you that it in any way resembles real dancing. If someone came up to me and said "WOW YOU'RE GOOD AT DANCING YOU PLAY DDR" I would laugh in their face. It's stepping on arrows, that's what it is, but I think "HYPER STEP ON ARROWS REVOLUTION" is not very catch don't you agree?
Now, I have no problems with you ranting, go for it, but please don't try to sound like you actually went in depth and researched your topic when you didn't. You might actually fool someone into missing out on a very fun and entertaining game.
-Levin
P.S. I hate raves, I hate drugs, I hate 300 hour techno remixes, and I love DDR

not quite as in depth but I figure it gets the point across

Watch it levin, some of us loves technos and rave!

As for this dude of making an opinion, he sure does rub it in when he can't pass all of the songs! That's the reason why he rant!

When I see him, he's done for!

Nice letter there addricted, i could learn a thing or 20 from your writing style riiight.gif

But i agree, that guy's rant was extremely vague, contained gross overgeneralizations, and contained so many logical fallicies my college prof would have a heart attack.

You know, you always wonder what kind of stupid jerkoff writes these kind of things. Then they say something like "Let me state again for the record that dancing and video games do not mix. There are only two instances where dancing in front of a computer is acceptable. One is when some difficult piece of code has been completed. The other involves hot girls and webcams" And u realize, hmm this must be a 40 yr old living in his parents basment who watches porn. I wasnt shocked to continue reading and see that it all said the same thing. He hates ddr. Well there will always be flamers.......and then theres us!

This Dude is missing the point of DDR completely its not just the Art of the game it’s a bringing together of people with a common interest. I don’t see in harking on people like Anime or collecting stamps so I think all we really can do is realize that some people are ignorant to DDRs’ quality’s of being more then just a game we enjoy to play and get good at.

Your opinions are not vaild when you have to stoop to the point of spreading rumors and lies and get people like me to reply. . maybe you are seeking a reply. . a reaction? Just like the people you doggy and moan about in your 13 head forums, which . .correct me if I'm wrong. . makes you a bit of a hypocrite no?

If you don't like DDR, no reason to spread lies. . I know I'm wasting my breath. . you've been chewed out 10x over by now so I'm doing nothing more than releasing tension but SHOULD you read this then my goal is complete. . to make you feel as poopy as the people who have did nothing more than enjoy life and play a damn game.

I said:

Quote:
Mr. Crayfish,

Your rant (biased and misinformed) was insulting. You made overgeneralizations about everyone who plays DDR as a whole with what looks like little or no research at all. The childish names and little side comments don't help with your arguement, either. Have you ever played DDR? Talked to someone who has played DDR? Ever see anyone play DDR? From the look of your disgusting litlle rant, i think the answer is no. The fun little drug references are so far from the truth, its laughable. No one that I know that plays DDR does drugs, and I could probably vouch for thousands. You used steriotypes of jacked-up ravers as a point...you're wrong again. The reason that DDr is at arcades and on about 5-6 different consoles is that it's popular. Something to ponder. The sexual overtones that you halucinate would have never been give an "E" on three different home versions of DDR by the ESRB (and you know how strict they are on their grading). Tounaments are the same as a Quake tournament, or anyother game tounament to date. The "blasting" music that you speak of if not true either. It's called a volume control on a television. People can use it to adjust the voilume. Nothing to do with the game at all, great job spinning the point. DDR isn't the only game that has dancing/music elements in a game. There's Frequency/Amplitude, StepMania, DacingStage, and other Beatmani stuff. A good amount of these songs are made specifically for Konami (would have known that had you spent....5 mins on Google) and therefore a soundtrack of the songs was a great idea, they make more money. I find it suprising and disturbing that you can find a sexual overtone in a disney game, with mickey and minnie nonetheless. Hope you feel great now that you can make an entire generalization about one game and the people who play it without knowing what the hell you're talking about.

Theres my little e-mail to him. He needs to get some facts straight.
