Why Can't I Change My Name Back?

why cant i change my name back to Hey! Its [Neil]?? it says username is disallowed or something, hmm wait, did i get banned??

You haven't been banned.

It's because "[" and "]" have been added to the set of characters that are not allowed in user names.

They mess up the format of the text when someone replies to a thread and quotes people with brackets in their usernames.

did we ban the creation of names with the brackets or are we forcing users who currently have it to get rid of it?

IguanaGrrl still has the [ and ] brackets...I think it's only for the ending part of the username.

The brackets are banned altogether from new usernames; if I were to try Xhad[TWG] it wouldn't work.

I don't think we've officially asked anyone to change their existing names, but even if we do I don't see a reason to bother unless the person's name is screwing up the quote code.

EDIT: Just to clarify, having brackets in your name doesn't screw the code if they are closed, but banning "[" and "]" from new usernames is easier than checking to see if they are done such that there are no open brackets hanging.

It's not worth the trouble to validate brackets as opposed to banning them, but it's also not worth the trouble to go on some kind of bracket witchunt against people whose names don't cause any problems.
