VERY stupid idea.
NEWS FLASH: ALL DDR arcade versions after 3rd are FOR SALE AND USE IN JAPAN ONLY. Plus, most, if not all, of our machine systems here in the staes are bootleg. If we were to petition Konami for a new mix, and they knew Americans were the ones asking for it, they'd have more reasons not to make new ones: because they won't make any money off of it. Extreme is a great mix, and it's gigantic, plus they revived old songs.
It isn't certain if we'll get a new mix, and at this point, it's very sketchy, so if you want to cry and wait, fine by me. I think you're looking to the future and not appreciating the present. We're very, very lucky to have any of the mixes we have now. Konami could in fact take legal action anytime, and say goodbye to all of our DDR (ALL bootlegs). Konami also closed their American coin-op office, so don't expect a new American mix, ever.
I myself think DDR is done now, becuase it has lost popularity in Japan, and remember the little squabble and crying about the loss of Smile.dk in DDR mixes? Butterfly is back in Extreme. You tell me why Smile.dk hasn't appeared until now. Wait... I think I may have an answer. Don't quote me on this, but... I believe that Konami can in fact avoid confrontation with Smile.dk if this is the last mix. I believe that to be my largest piece of evidence.
Now let's see... are you still moaning about a new mix at all? Because if you are, you're missing out on Extreme, probably the greatest mix yet. I wouldn't be upset if this was our last mix; we've been blessed with hundreds of great songs and good times that we'll never forget. What's to get upset about? If it's dead, it's still not over, am I right? |
Perhaps if Konami gets enough emails they will finally create another DDR mix actually licensed for the USA. Yes DDR is dead in Japan, but we have got to show Konami that there is a massive not completely tapped market here in the USA.
Second of all let's also convince Konami that DDR is a series that can't live without the arcades. Home versions of DDR really aren't that much fun, because they don't have the advantage of being a public environment. Without this factor you don't get to play with friends quite so often and there is not often enough an audience to perform for. |

DDR is not dead in Japan. It's just nowhere near its peak days. (3rd Mix, 4th Mix) Konami doesn't keep putting money into making new versions of the game if it doesn't make them any money. DDR still makes them money.
And that interview looked promising.... btw, to the guy with the "reliable source" at E3: Exactly how specific were you? Because the person could have easily been talking about a new US arcade version being out of the question, not a Japanese one.
I think people like to jump to conclusions about something being the last mix to add drama to it all. I've been to Japan. twice. Once in summer 2000, once in summer 2001.
Summer 2000 = 3rd Mix Plus, Solo 2000 days. EXTREMELY popular. I went to an arcade in Tokyo that had like three 3rd Mixes and 2 Solo2ks.
Summer 2001 = 5th Mix is the newest now. Many arcades have it, most of the rest just stuck with their 4th Mix machines. However, the popularity has fallen somewhat. The aforementioned arcade has gone from all of those machines to just one 5th Mix.... but lots of people were playing it.
And I haven't been back since.... but from what I've heard, Max2 did very well in Japan. I don't know about DDREX.
If Konami has a smart marketing department, they'll wait a while to release the next DDR, and they won't release it in December. If you want to market a game as being "fun" and "fresh" and stuff, you release it right around good-weather vacation time.... in Japan, this would either be August or March. It's the same reason so many companies here in the States release things during the summer..... you release the product at the most social time. New soft drinks, movies, ARCADE GAMES, etc.
And it needs to have a bright, flashy color scheme. I like green and all, but DDREX's color scheme looks like bathroom tile, not like a dance club. 5th Mix green = good. DDREX green = good for DECORATING... maybe. I say make the marquee bright orange (like M.Dew Live Wire orange).... and release it in either August or March....
Anyways, let's just wait and see. Stop worrying about it and keep playing the 10 mixes we have. We'll all find out for sure eventually.

All I think is that they should have DDR Fan Mix. Fan Music, fan mods etc.
for 9th mix. _________________

I need to get some input on this one, too. If we were to send in steps and mods (and we know how much you all want a new mix right now), it would take years. They would get millions of step layouts, some that they wouldn't be even able to read, and then they would have to program them into the game. Then they would have to test them, see if they were even acceptable, and then come up with difficulty charts and feet ratings. As you can see, we'll never get that to happen. They would even have to credit everyone with the steps unless they claimed that all submissions became their property.
If you have musical talent, though, and you want to get into the next mix SOMEHOW, you could maybe notify Konami and send them some of your songs. It's very possible. Look at Smile.dk, Captain Jack, and Bus Stop. They all came from the outside, and all had several songs in the DDR series. _________________

I second that. Konami is a company about making money. Just like any other company. The article gave many of us hope for a new mix. The only way that will happen is that everyone shows an interest in a new mix. Not only do we have the masses of current players but, we also have stories out there about how DDR has changed their life and changed their minds. Wasn't there an article about a certain senator that hated video games but checked out DDR and changed his mind about video games in general. Even in my own life. I have diabetes and the health benefits that I have received by playing DDR is amazing. Konami has many reasons to keep the series alive with stories like that. Even schools are using it in their PE program. The article that everyone is hinting to says that they are not getting rid of their Bemani division, which is true. I don't think that they meant in the arcades though. It's very expensive to produce arcade games and their home division is doing well (at least in the US market). That is the reason like I said in my earlier post they have somewhat shifted the DDR series to the US. By telling Konami what we want, we could very well see another USA mix. USA Extreme maybe? It's all up to ALL of us to help keep the series alive (in the arcades). If anyone is interested in organizing an effort to tell Konami what we want please PM or e-mail me. |

You're right, otherwise they would not have made DDR Extreme for the Japanese market. |

i think jamk is sooooo right...
in my own thoughts, we need to mass and tell Konami of america that we need them to start making ddr arcade mixes for US!!!
and if we do get new ddr mix for america, it should be called "DDR World 1st Mix" or "DDR International" or "DDR Club" or "DDR worldwide" or "DDR Global" or something that has an all around the world kind of name to it............
i hope we get new mixes forever, but i am in no rush, because i still cannot beat any of the maxes, and it will take a long time of rme to get good enough to even need new harder songs!!! But there are some people who have already done the hardest stuff out there.... _________________

From what I've heard, I wouldn't say DDR is dead in Japan, but is definitely past its peek popularity. Depending on how well Extreme does/did, they may consider releasing another DDR mix, but I honestly doubt that e-mails from America would prompt them to release another mix in Japan. But, hey, we can try.
That's not to say I don't want another mix, though. Being the fanatical DDR player that I am, I of course want to see it do well. Still, given DDR's lack of popularity in Japan and the general bad shape of the arcade industry as a whole, I wouldn't be surprised if Konami pulled the plug on DDR in the arcades. I don't think this will be the end of the game, though. Probably, the future of DDR in America, at least, will be home versions like Ultramix, being developed right now. _________________

Yes and this is the problem that I was discussing earlier. Konami is sadly mistaken if they really think that DDR will survive in the home market. DDR can't live too long without the arcades. Without the arcades the public environment factor that allows people to almost always have somebody to play with, introduce the game to, and perform for is almost completely gone.
I suppose the best thing to do is to play DDR Extreme tenfold when they release DDR for X-Box. Let's show them that the arcade mixes are their real bread winners. |

The arcade industry is in the crapper here in the States, but I'm pretty it's still going strong in Japan.
And it's Japan that's going to decide whether or not to make a 9th Mix. KoJ is happy that we like the game so much, but we don't exactly fit into their sales figures.

Notice how most of the dates for the news page say 98?
While DDR came out at the *end* of 98, it was still 98. _________________
