|
|
I hear alot of stories, and read alot of posts here about things that happen to DDR machines. Broken CD roms, CD's, "monitor boards", etc...
For example, this begs the question, most any (even cheap cd players) will probably work for at least 20+ years, so why are DDR machines prone to having problems with cd drives, and other things inside the cabnet, that arn't even subjected to physical abuse?
Also, I see no reason that a complete DDR machine to cost $4000+ unless music licenses are the cause. Most of the machine is cheap, and I would see no reason to pay over $2000 for one.
Of course, this is just my observations, so please feel free to prove me wrong. |

Most of the machine that are in the USA arcades are bootlegs of the game, so the CD or the CD DRIVE may not be in prestine condition.
Any arcade game is going to be a lot of money then how much it is made for, look at shoes for instance. Nike's are made for about 5 cents and maybe 15 cents of material. Then they turn around and sell them for $100+
Everyone has to make a profit off of their items they are selling. _________________

Actually, if you think about it, internal parts ARE subject to physical "abuse". The CD's are whirring all day, and with or without proper ventilation, the parts wear down. That's why machines with internal moving parts break; heat and other factors bring its demise. There is no such thing as perpetual motion. _________________

Good point, I think that proves why they break _________________

I seriously doubt it gets "overheated". A 33 mgz processor, and a self fanned CD rom would/should be able to run correctly even if there was, say, a space heater installed inside. |

Actually the parts do wear down. Just look at all of the IIDX machines with broken DVD players. |
That went way over my head. _________________

IIDX machines have a separate DVD drive for the movie disk. If there is a problem with that subsystem then the game will stay play as normal but you'll see an error image where the movies should go. It shows a picture of the DVD drive with an arrow pointing to it. Anyhow, almost every IIDX machine I've ever heard anyone report back from is having this problem ( or soon will ).
DDR machines are expensive because they're both imported AND in high demand. No, they're not worth 4 grand but like Technick says Nike shoes aren't worth $100 either. The bootlegs are expensive because the bootleggers know what they can get away with.
DDR Machines also have to travel long distances too. Take the 7th mix at my local Namco arcade for example. It started its life as a 3rd mix Asian machine. So this game game has been nearly around the world! Imagine the trip from the factory where it was assembled to a Chinese distributor, then to a Chinese arcade, then to a wherehouse, then to a boat, then to California, then to a truck, then across North America all the way to Massachusetts. And who knows where its been in the meantime or who was repsonsible for it? Its really a miracle that it got here in as many pieces as it did. |
