I don't think it's necessary to wait until you've A'd or B'd all of the songs on Light. Some of those are 6 footers, and there are 2 and 3 foot Trick songs.
Also, I'd just say to play a group of songs until you can consistently pass them or get a C, then pick songs one foot up (or faster songs with the same foot rating). |

I don't really see why you brought up the gender issue. I know a bunch of men who never really got past one or two feet and I know at least one female who went from beginning to 5 feet in 4 or 5 times playing the game. And another of my female friends that I taught was doing three feet by the end of two hours. There are people who are slower to learn, and think that's all you need to say. I don't even remember if the gender of the inital person in question was ever mentioned. I think that you are right that on average women are slower to get DDR. However I don't think gender is really worth mentioning, since you could have just said "some people are slower, make allowance for that."
I'm not trying to come down hard on you or anything and I think you were honestly not trying to be defamatory, but I wanted to make the minor point that I don't think you needed to make gender enter into this issue. |

I think you need to have some good rythem (and spelling  ) to get DDR (or Bemani) down.

by the way:
Allie is a girl's name and the person im teaching is a boy.... not like it matters but you brought up the gender issue.

If you want too....but...
Once upon a time i was just like your friend.
I couldn't pass 1 footers or anything like that...
Now...like a year later..I'm able to beat 9 footers (and "sometimes" 10 footers...when I want to)
Just let him take his time to learn..he'll get it soon enough

I wouldn't bother terribly much with lesson mode. Still can't pass the last section of the last lesson in DS: EuroMix. Most likely because I rather use my right foot for all arrows than do spins. Yes, the first few lessons are quite good, but I A one two-footer after six days of playing, three of which I was too sore to play, and I'm not passing the lesson mode anytime soon.
One thing that helped me was to get started on a song that only used the left and right arrows (I Will Survive on Beginner does that, in my game), since I didn't have to think much about moving my feet aside from stepping on the arrows. I AAA'd that one the morning after I got the game, after a total of perhaps three hours of play.
I still need to get used to standing on the arrows. L-R-L-R 1/4ths look really silly when I do them, 'cause I rather bounce back and forth between the arrows than stand on them.
Just my two small-denomination monetary pieces.

| Um... when just getting started, I think it should be okay to step back to the middle. I'm starting to learn how to not step back, but sometimes I just need to. I don't care if it's more effort... I'm okay with sweating and losing weight! |

First of all gender doesn't have anything to do with how well you play. Where I'm origanlly from (Hawaii) there are a lot of female players out there. Most of which plays 9 footers without a problem.
The best way that you could teach someone is to use a PS or PS2 with the controller. They will learn timing and better understand the concept of how to play. One footers might not be the best place to start. Even lesson modes uses 3 to 4 footer songs. The first lesson mode is usually a concept builder. The second lessons work on structure. Correct foot placments and how to read the information that coming on the screen. Lesson 3 is usually putting it together. Your almost ready for your first song. Then lesson 4 is an entire song. Or something to that effect.
If the person is really bad, don't give up. If that person keeps playing, that means that they are having fun and trying to learn something new. When I first started, I really sucked. I could only pass Have You Never Been Mellow and Boom Boom Dollar. Now 4 years later, I can play just about any 9 foot song on single or double. Like someone said earlier in this thread, "It take practice and paticence." |

All of us had to start somewhere. I can see people being overwhelmed at the start by the arrows to begin with even if only what more experienced players would see as a slow or steady stream of arrows. Delphy is a shortened version of Delphinus (see below). I like dolphins

| When I started out I failed one-footers for the longest time (weeks, seriously!), I was terrible! Now, only a few months later I have passed a bunch of catas and I get better by the day. |
