Hi guys, moderator here.

What I am going to do is this. Tomorrow I am going to go through this thread (all 25 pages) and find the links to the drivers for both USB and Parallel port adapters. I am also going to make a section in the FAQ for it as well. Then this thing is going to get locked, 25 pages is a bit obnoxious.

After this is all done, you will be able to ask questions about the adapters just like you are able to with the simulators (as long as it's not answered in the FAQ and you tried all the links that apply to you).

Though I would like some help. If some people could PM me with some driver links and tutorials to get the FAQ started, that would make this go much smoother.

Thanks.

Since I didn't lock the DWI/SM help thread after I destickied it, I don't think I will lock this one either.

Though you are now free to post new questions about adapters that aren't already answered in the FAQ

You may continue here as well.

Ok so I got an EMS USB 2 adapter (it's the newer black one) and when it said it was going to install itself I FOOLISHLY told it not to. Then I put in the floppy that came with it and it did what it had to do. Then I started Stepmania and tried BOTH ignore joy axis options, downloaded drivers (tons) and tried to plug it in again so it would install itself and NOTHING works.

Can somone please tell me what to do? E4.gif

Oh yea and I'm using windows XP

Wow. I can't believe how many people have had problems installing this thing (or getting lag). I've installed it on four different PCs with different OS's (Win98SE, WinME, WinXP Home, WinXP Professional) and different processors (Athlon XP, PIII, PIV, PIV-M) with zero problems. And I'm using StepMania 3.0 Final and CVS (May 31 build).

Okay.

1. Do not have the EMS2USB adapter plugged into the USB port. Make sure the switch on the adapter is set to "PC."

2. Boot up the PC. I would suggest copying the contents of the floppy to the desktop (in a folder so your desktop isn't flooded). Run the setup.exe program. NOTE: this shouldn't be necessary on Windows XP, but it won't hurt either so do it even on Windows XP (and even if it did, that's why you have driver rollback and/or system restore). If you don't have the floppy or want to make sure you have the latest files, go to http://www.hkems.com/files/EMS%20USB%20JOYPAD2.zip and download the latest drivers.

3. After the setup.exe is done doing its thing, connect the pads to the EMS2USB adapter. Make sure the pads are COMPLETELY connected to the adapter (it's a tight fit so you might not realize it's not all the way on).

4. Connect the adapter to a USB port. Win9X platforms should detect it and list it as a game controller device. WinXP will use the generic HID device. You can go to Game Controllers in the Control Panel to see it in its working glory. NOTE: There are templates listed in the Control Panel for stuff like "Dance". Leave it at "Auto".

5. Launch StepMania (instructions for both 3.0 Final and CVS).

6. Make sure the Options|Input Options|Ignore Joy Axes is set to ON. Do this BEFORE configuring the pad for play. For some reason, the May 28 CVS build has this off by default. I think 3.0 Final has it on by default but make sure.

7. Configure the pad for play (Hit <Enter> and then step on the appropriate pad button). Set the six arrows and the Start and Select buttons (select should be your Back button).

8. Make sure you have Vsync set to on. You should always have this on (any gamer who plays a lot of shooters knows this) and people who say to turn it off have piss-slow machines and are trying to make up for lack of speed. Now, some monitors cannot do it, but you should have the monitor's refresh rate (what the Vsync is synching to) set to a multiple of 30 (i.e., 60, 90, 120). This will ensure that a wide variety of machines will be properly synched. However, the refresh rate isn't that important if you have a decently fast machine. THE ONLY TIME VSYNC SHOULD BE OFF IS FOR BENCHMARKING SYSTEMS.

9. Some people are having problems with the the device with regards to the USB interface. In the Device Manager Properties, check the "Disable USB Error Detection" box. This is found (may vary slightly on systems) under the properties for the host controller. If you have more than one controller, make sure it's set for each controller. Another issue is how some people's PC have their power management set on their USB ports. Some systems are so-called "intelligent" in that they cut off power to the port if they device is not in use. Well, the problem is that the device isn't turned back on properly when you actually need it (this is for those people who say the adapter works for awhile and then stops working, and then starts working again when the system is rebooted). So you need to set it so that the ports are always powered. This feature is really only useful in laptops and notebooks but most people who play on those (myself included for DDR on TV) have it plugged into the wall anyways. Lastly, if you have a 3rd party motherboard chipset (SiS, Via, Nvidia, etc.), make sure you have the latest USB drivers.

10. If you plan on disconnecting the adapter from the PC a lot (i.e., you play on the laptop), you should do it after you shut down. Make sure you plug it in before you boot up the system. This way, the PC doesn't know that the device was ever removed from the system. Also, try to use the same USB port that you installed it on because each port can be mapped to a different controller. Technically, you shouldn't have to do any of this with USB because it's supposed to be hot-pluggable, but the implementation has been less than 100% rock-solid when it comes to game controllers and other devices so you should do this to be on the safe side. If you can get away without it, props to ya... And if you only use the controller for your dance pads, leave the pads connected to the adapter and only have the adapter-to-pc be the connecting part. The less times you put something on or off, the less chance of it wearing out...

RESULT: After all this you should have no lag and the device should be fully functional. Now, it seems all long and extreme. Some of these steps can be taken out of course, depending on how many problems you have. If you have zero problems doing what you're doing, then keep doing it that way.

NOTE: DO NOT USE JOY2KEY FOR DDR GAMING. It will give a high probability of lag. Joy2key is a last resort for those pc games that won't recognize the playstation controllers properly and therefore works around that by mapping the joysticks to keyboard commands. Always try to use the adapter AS IS before installing some 3rd party app...

I finally got my BNS DX-Xtreme Dance Pad, and now I can't find the drivers for the parallel port it came with! I went to BNS' website and used their links, but they didn't have it. I already tried emulatronia.com and they don't have it anymore! Please tell me where I can download the driver for XP!

I need help with installing the drivers for Direct Pad Pro! I can't find the version that works for 2000 and xp. Also, how do i install the driver once i download it? Most FAQ say to click ADD and then Add other, well on XP there is no add other. What do I do? When i go to game controllers from my control panel and click add there's no direct pad pro! Please help me. This is really getting frustrating.

I tried looking through the forums for help, but i couldn't find anything. I recently purchased the "Super Dual Box" to hook my pad up to my comp. Natrually, I can't get it to work even though all the drives etc etc are installed. I even d-lowed that "JoyToKey" thing but couldnt figure that out either. If anyone could help, I have both SM and DWI, though I prefer SM, because DWI runs like poop. Any help would be appreciated.

I can not figure out how to get my parallel adaptor to work. I have the drivers installed and the thing is set as PSX Digital and i can calibrate it and everything, but when i go into Stepmania, it doesn't recognize the arrow steps, only the square, circle,x,triangle, start, and select. Sorry if someone asked this but the page loads to slow for me to look through every page, please help.

i'll try messing with it this weekend (WHEN I'M SOBER) and let yall know about it, unless someone else has some experience with it.

i was thinking JOY2KEY, but that nice long post from the guy said it causes lag... i'll have to mess with it myself.

i got it to work fine, because my MyMyBox metal pad has exposed wiring underneath, so i just rewired up and right, to O and X, and now that works find! lol! but i'd much rather use an ignition pad for my computer set up got carpet down, and metal pad be heavy, yo) so i'm looking about maybe forcing different drivers to work with the converter, so that it can read left and right up and down as separate buttons ... whhhhaaaackkkknessss... ah well, not like i'm passing nearly half the 10footers bemaniruler originals on my feet, BUT WE SHALL SEE.

i've sat in front of this computer for 6 hours now...can someone PLEASE post a place to get a driver that allows for a "button mode" on the PSX joystick/directional pad? or the ignoring of axis on the controller?

i got the regular PSX controller to work perfectly with stepmania and i can play just like on a console but i cannot use the DDR pad because it reads the axis...and turning on/off "ignore axis" under the stepmania input options does not help.

i'm so lost... E19.gif

i'm using a parrallel port if that matters, and it hooks up all well and good...it's just these damn axis

Im god.... no but....

IM me and ill answer all "easy" question like about parallel adaptor :

how can I make that thing work with that thing..

I seachred like a donkey to find stupid driver for my cheap boom adaptor (p.s. I didnt find any that work) for nothing and I found lot of thing about other controller.

so my boom adaptor dont work... BANG.. no more plastic cover.. yeah ! a female PSX plug did a homemade parrallel one..

so for the "cant use the arrow"

if you use PSX PAD (or NTpad.. i think) you must set it to "LEFT ANALOG" so the arrow = button (on psx pad you can chose axy or button mode)

and so it will work WITH PARALLEL ADAPTOR

for USB.. i didnt search too much about other than cheap crap boom adaptor (that are not working.....for DDR)

but I could help .. I know a......l...o...t.. about PC ( erm.gif hehe )

Im up on all messenger (aim, icq, yahoo, msn,.... I use trillian E10.gif) from 5PM to 12PM (can be more)( -5 GTM EAST CAN/US)

have a good night E10.gif

Hmm, I just got a "Kiky X-series" USB Adapter, and it reads the arrows as the analog stick. Is there any way to fix this?

Oh and BTW, I tried it with a normal controller and both DWI and Stepmania didn't read the normal D-Pad. They also didn't read the D-Pad on my other PC game controller. Is it an in-game error?

in step mania you have a "ignore axis" option so that ignore the D-pad (if the adaptor map the arrow to axis... goog.gif )

DWI got the same thing but its not an option its just that DWI always ignore axis (because with axis you cannot push 2 button at same time (up/down left/right... try that with a D-Pad)

I dont know if their is some kind of driver to make your adaptor use button but... this explain what you got
