The search feature is broken. I've been trying for half an hour to do a search, and all I ever get is time outs. I tried just browsing this topic, but after the a few hundred posts, I disgarded that as futile.
OK, my stupid question...
How far is it between pads for doubles? is it 2 inches, 1 1/2, 1 or what?
I'm getting ready for my project (I'm likely not using my older design on sheet metal switches cause I found a soultion for about $4 (total) that will likely make that a rediculous waste of time.
I'm not sure if anyone here has heard of Mouser Electronics, but it makes Radio Shack look the same way a DVD-RAM makes a floppy disk look (sorry, I'm a comp person and I was fresh out of comparisons, and I want to spread the gospel of DVD-RAM).
Instead of having everyone go out and buy different switches from them (and buy up all of the onse I want) I'm going to buy a nice selection and see which ones work the best.
As an example of what they have, they have some tactile switches (I'll have to see how they are) that have a life of 1,000,000 pushes and cost 26 cents for one, less in bulk.
If I descide to go with my original plan on an adjustable platform inside of the steps and a single micro switch for each, they have a large selection of those also.
BTW- I just picked up a Ascii Pad for the controller I'm going to use, and instead of CAT5 wire, I'm going to use a PSone extention cord cut in half (one half going into the controller, and the other half going into the dance pad, then they can plug together). The kewl thing is that I got them both used for $1 each. Now for another question (that I would normally search for) has anyone had any problem using an Ascii Pad for this? They used to make the best pads on the market, but they have kinda shrunk into the background with the cheap pad makers like MadCatz and InterAct. |

My tubing |
Beefman used that stuff, its just regular silicone tubing, right?
I bought that stuff, but it was way too hard so i ditched it for my vinal tubing _________________

1 13/16ths. I am going to use 2", since I figure it's only a slight difference but so much easier to cut(ie. get it already cut). _________________

I've had a lot of trouble with precut stuff, so If I need it cut to get it home (read: Honda Civictrunks are small) then I ask for it at least an inch past what I need, cause so far most of the cuts I've gotten are 1/2 off and crooked (maybe there saw isn't calibrated right or something?)
Anyway, I'm going to do about the same thing. Instead of 10 15/16" I'm making it on the 11" scale. And instead of... um that number you said, I'll use 2" also.
Estimaters of America and Other Places Unite!!!
OK, back to the subject. When I first came on here, ppl were using foam strips as the padding for the steps, now some ppl are using tubes. I just wanted to throw my 2 cents worth in and say that I went looking for some sort of foam rubber. I descided eiter the cheap wrist rests at Office Depot (solid foam rubber, about an inch thick, cheack cause it has the Office Depot advertisement on it) or the foam rubber floor pads (a four count of 3' squares that end connect like jigsaw puzzles for $15). I went with the floor pads (cause I can use most of them in the shop) and we'll see later if they work. I ordered about 8 different switch types from Mouser Electronics and they will be here by mid next week. The total for the switches was just about $3.75 cause I got a selection rather then just the 26 cent ones. If they work, I'm going to have four in each step at the mid points of the sides.
As for the Ascii pad, it will be a tight fit, but should work, I found the connections rather easily, although I'm going to have to scrape them to be able to solder to them. I'll find out if there is a problem with the arrows later (some pads have a similar problem to the computer where they don't like up and down at the same time, I hope this isn't one of them).
OK, next question. The PSone extension cable has 8 conductors. If I use just one for ground (they have a bare wire for it) and four for the arrows, should I use the remaing three for buttons and if so what buttons should they be? I mean, start and select? X, O, and Start? I've seen some pads that have some corner arrows, but I have no idea what those are used for.
Any help/info on this would be appriciated. I'm hanging on every post, so feel free to drop a line. |

If anybody can tell me what this...
http://student.seas.gwu.edu/~zottower/DDR%20Pad/What%20is%20This.JPG
is or better yet, where to buy them (I didn't see them in radio shack's online catalog), you'll be my hero.
There's 2 wires runnign into it, one can act as ground, the other as (up, down, left, right, whatever). These are used in the contacts of my old metal pad and after I modded the panels with sheet metal, it is SOOO sensitive. It NEVER misfires on a step or acts up. Otherwise, the construction of the pad is terrible (it's so flimsy), but the arrow panels are perfect. I'm thinking I might screw this whole corner brace idea if I can find those things in the picture for cheap. _________________

I dont know if you can buy those thing... but you could "easely" make them with conductive tape (somehting like that).... I saw that on the "piyo" ddr pad..(thing like that glued on the floor and conductive tape on the shoes... lol.. ill try to have a link)
.... otherwise... dont really know about it.. _________________

MoonJihad wrote: | Patster: How do you bend your sheet metal? The job you did with the sheet metal looks really clean, unlike a lot of pads out there. Is there a special technique to use to get clean bends like that? |
First I screwed down all 4 corners to the panel: http://home.attbi.com/~patster/009.jpg
Next use a rubber mallet to hammer the edges of the wooden panel with the sheet metal on top. Hammering the edges will put a nice crease in the sheet metal. Just be sure to start at one corner and work your way along the edge to the next corner. Bend one side a little bit at a time by hammering the edge with the mallet. Repeat until the sheet metal is flat against the side of the wood panel. http://home.attbi.com/~patster/011.jpg Just take your time and it should look nice. |

Ok, I gotta question...
Ive been dying for a metal pad, and I have 2 options since I can get a new MyMyBox metal for about $120.
Should I get the MyMyBox metal and mod it, or should I just build one, using ddrhomepad's design?
Also, what are the flaws with the MyMyBox metal, even if it is modded with
the sheet metal, and is it easily fixable and as reliable as a home built one? _________________

thanks |
my sheet metal is very thin, i think 26 guage, thats what i used, with spray adhesive to attach it. The screws that i am talking about are the ones that the Homepad design suggestd you use. They are called 1-1/4 inch Phillips Mod Truss, Lath, Self Drill Screws and they can be seen in this picture http://www.digitaltorque.com/dancepad/modscrews.html
hope this helps _________________

Can anyone tell me witch of those are bright :
http://www.radioshack.ca/estore/category.aspx?language=en-CA&pagenum=3&category=Lamps&catalog=RadioShack
(.ca because our radioshack is not selling what .com have)
I think the first of page 3 should be nice (Ill put a resistor for the 2... 3 volt.. )
I fgured out that it was not a + and - prob... it was to much mA troug my transistor so it burned... Ill try to reuse my other bulb (not really brihgt when putting a 1kresistor) with a new transistor. _________________

oh, those are the screws u used for braces? Hmm arent the heads to big? like, it would seem that when your done the screws would be touching the ground.
Im getting 22 or 26 gague galvanized steel sheet metal this week. I WAS using some crappy 28 gague aluminum metal that got totally demolished by the screws. Hopefully, my new design is better! _________________
