DDR....getting un popular???

While my interest in DDR is nowhere what it used to be, I definately believe its overall popularity is increasing -- at least here in Calgary.

Back in the 3rd - 5th Mix days when I started, there weren't many people playing the game. Few places actually had a machine, and it seemed only the elite players were playing it. I thought the game was cool the first time I tried it, but after seeing the experts play, I was a little frightened -- there was no way I'd be as good as them.... or so I thought.

Once DDRMAX2 hit Calgary, things really started to take off..... more and more arcades started getting DDR, and this helped attract many more new players.

We now hold regular tournaments (which get quite a lot of promotion), and our DDR community is growing quite quickly.

Even though I do not play as much as I used to; between a knee injury that slows me down from time to time, and a new career as a promotional manager, I don't have a lot of time to go to the arcade and pop in a few tokens. Or for that matter even play my home version. Between corporate meetings and not to mention college (thank god it's summer) my playing has gone down hill fast. I still enjoy hearing about other people play and my girlfriend is constantly getting new people to try it out. Hmmm do you think they will allow me to set up my home pad in my office?

Any way like it was stated in a previous post. DDR is a continuing cycle. Older players lose interest, new players try something new. Old players yell at new players for screwing up horribly and breaking ddr etiquette. It's going to be around for a while. Konami knew what they were getting into and have come out on top.

For some reason after playing for 2 years, you do get bored of it sometimes.

I take 1 month to 2 month breaks every now and then, so that when I go back to the arcade I have a new found interest in the game.

If anyone one else feels they have been playing to long and are too good to play anymore, then quit, I am sure a stream of noobs will come and fill your spot.

I had lost some interest after they took away our 3rd mix

... but later another arcade got max2 (when it was the newest mix), and eventually my desire to play that slacked off some, but now we have extreme (I've known for 3 days now...) and i've been playing it every day since... I guess what I'm trying to say is that the cycle does continue as stated, it's just that some of the more veteran-like people have their interest rekindled, and some of the newbies give up after they can pass butterfly basic... so there are people coming into and leaving the cycle that screw it up some...

DDR was kinda popular last year, when I was in middle school.

Now barely anyone at high school can pass a 5-footer. Plus people are unaware of DDR Extreme.

yeah its seems that ppl in the forum are starting to fade away from DDR. I still play it alot though it is one of those games at the arcade that i just love to play.

My playing breakdown for a week now goes:

1 day Extreme
1 day Pump Extra
5 days IIDX

Let's face it, when you play a game excessively for a long period of time, you're going to lose interest. I've been playing DDR for a year and a half, rather excessively for most of that. It's going to lose its edge, even with new mixes and songs and all that.

Pump is a nice change of pace (cheap doubles, never a line). IIDX is a great change of pace (challenging without draining my stamina, thus, I can play longer).

I still play DDR, I'm still interested in DDR, but you can only give it a ton of energy for so long, you know?

Playing DDR has resparked my interest in Beatmania, and I'm trying to regain skillz in that. I'm also starting to look at that Pump machine more seriously. I played it a few weeks back and failed very quickly... so I see it as a challenge to take on. I'm not going to quit DDR, I'd just like to play a few different things as well. Why do people think if you're not playing DDR 7 days a week that you're 'quitting'?

i think there is a simple answer. Everthing gets borring eventualy but just some people hang on to things more then others. We've all been obsess over one thing or another... videogames, cards, toys.etc and then we just throw them out like their useless junk. But at one time we coulnt stop thinking about them cause we though they were sooooo cool. Same things apply with ddr its just been too long and ppl are loosing intress.
i like only jplay ddr 1 or none a week... *sigh* just isnt as great as before

I've been playing for around 2 years now, and I still play daily, sometimes for as much as 3 hours or more. I'm still not one of the '1337' who can 'A' or 'AA' MAX300, but I'm getting there and I am constantly learning new techniques. Seeing people beating Oni courses like Legend Road and Demon Road shows me how much better I can possibly get and keeps me playing.
I'll probably be playing another 2 years from now, too.

My 2 year mark of playing the game of DDR is fast approaching, and i am not in the slightest going to quit. Sure, DDR isnt as fun as it was before, but in a sense, that is not whats keeping me playing the game. It the community. The DDRers around here are like a family to me. Plus my team and i for this summer are treking all over, checking out new ddr scenes. I will definately say that if it wasnt for them, or anyone else that plays in my ddr scene, i would have quit months ago.

I've sk8boarded for 4 years now (not counting the time I've taken off) and I still have a passion for it.

I've listened to trance/techno/acid/goa/ambient/etc etc since I was 7 years old. I'm 19 now. I still listen to it like no tomorrow.

I've taken Tae Kwon Do for over 7 years and I dropped classes to teach myself. Now that I kinda want to settle down I'm probably going to try to forget about it for now.

I've been playing Tekken 4 for about 8 months now, I've already placed second in a local tourny, written FAQ's and accomplished many goals. [WINS:30] and that's my video game persue right there. People say I have a natural gift for Tekken 4...so it's my job to develop that gift and make a good use out of it.

I've been playing DDR for 2 years now. I'm this close to AAAing many songs and I want to get there. There's also so many possibilities found in DDR but after you AAA a song, that might defeat the purpose of playing that song again.

(side Note:)That would probably be my ONLY concern. I'll get there one day!

I'm just one of those "One-tasked" guys I guess you can say? I can do things over and over again...I dont know why. My girlfriends and guy friends cant do things over and over again.

It's hard to tell in the area where I live. It was huge last year, with everyone playing almost everyday. After the first tournament, interest just started to fade. And it has continued to fade IMO, but players are moving to other bemani such as IIDX and GF/DM.

The reasons why it's fading in my area? I really don't know. We're a PA community, and nobody will convert to FSing. Many of the players have passed LoM or PSM and all the hard songs. What's left for them to do? And if Konami creates a harder mix with harder songs and they pass it, again what is there left to do for them?

For me, I was playing it every day when I first started. A year later, I still play it almost every day because I just like to dance to the songs and I like the workout.

well my town(thanx to me and jonnyjonjon) is only just begging the so called "cycle" of DDR. DDR is so not known is this town that there are no such things as coin lines we had to introduce them one day and so far everyone kinda follwed hell i didnt even know what a coin line was untill i got here. Anyway we're holding our first tournament so soon it'll be popular here to.

In my local arcade I see people, preteens and young adults, play DDR. For me, I've been officially playing since 2001, and now I play more than ever with my best friend. I introduce DDR to some people ocassionally.
As someone said in this topic before, Konami should wait for a year before releasing another mix. Meanwhile, they should get more new songs or MIDIs. Some kind of new mode will be good! I wonder if they will combine DDR with some other Benami game...that will be nice.
