Well my advice is to exercise as often as you possibly can. And when you exercise make sure you exercise for at least 30 minutes.
If you want an arcade workout don't just play DDR. Play any other exercise game they have at your arcade. Including: MoCap Boxing, Rapid River, Para Para Paradise, Mazan, Fighting Mania, Pump It Up, Tsurugi, Downhill Bikers, Dance Maniax and othes
My third tip is to play any exercise game as actively as you can without interferring too much with gameplay. The thing with exercise video games is that they can't do your exercise for you. Exercise games are just a fun alternative to gym's cardio workout machines. So you must play an exercise game in a very active way which in turn gives you a good workout. You must especially play an exercise game very actively when you play Para Para Paradise and Mazan. It's really easy to play those 2 games by hardly moving
Could you please tell me what you got accidentily involved with? And why you really want to lose 5 pounds by the 2nd weekend of June. And to answer your final question: Yes it can be done! But only if you try hard! |

Daniel gave good advice. A few thigns I want to stress:
play songs that push your ablity or are fast. Play songs like Healing Vision angelic mix that make you work.
Try to leave enough time to get a nice continual work out. Playing int he arcade with pauses between songs isn't as good as playing 15+ songs all in a row.
If you're tired (Which you should be) don't sit down to rest, picka "rest" song which is in your ablity, but will keep you moving.
Make sure to have warm up and cool down songs.
Lastly, cut back on some of the higher calorie foods in your diet. Drink water and not soda, etc. |

do what i do for wrestling tournaments...
play hyped up songs and fake Paranoia Sur. Max Oni steps with my feet.
The thing is you really only lose water weight unless you do this everyday. I kind of overdid it once (lost 5 pounds in water) and i got really sick cause i didn't drink.
or
Just run up and down a hill. it's kind of boring but it helps a lot in weight loss and ddr endurance.
i kind of assumed you guys don't want to hear about diets cause it's kind of stupid, but if you must know i lost some weight by doing the not eating diet. That diet sucked, needless to say. |

It depends on your skill level as well. If you're playing 1-5 foot songs, your not going to lose much weight. You need to play the heavier songs to get more of an effect.
I to am trying to lost weight - and I'm being successful. I started playing DDR last December. At first weight loss was non-existent to very slow, because I was just learning and I was playing the slower songs. Now I'm doing 6-7, and maybe a couple of 8 footers, and my weight loss is very more apparent. Once I start being able to do 8-9 footers on a regular basis - it will help with the diet a lot more.
Looking at the past couple of months, I also noticed my endurance grow tremendously. I remember when I first started doing Afronova Primeval on Trick Mode (last Feburary), I could barely pass half the song because my legs would give out. Now, after AA'ing it, I can do it 10 times in a row without a problem.
Of course what you eat helps a lot to. You need to curve your diet for maximum weight loss. I also recommend at least 2-3 liters of water a day. I play DDR between 1-1.5 hours at least 5-6 times a week. |

I have the best advice of all of you.
Drop DDR because it's not going to make you lose weight. Go for an eight mile jog instead. _________________

If you can't lose weight playing DDR then you aren't going to lose weight going for an 8 mile jog. I don't know what makes you think this, but there are numerous success stories here on ddrfreak.com about how people did lose weight playing DDR. So I am sorry but you are cleary wrong. |

none of this will matter if your diet isnt right.
im trying this right now... im 15 pounds over wieght and i play ddr for 20 minutes every day. the problem is my diet sucks. so a nice diet with enough carbs to keep ya dancing with hardly any calories work (a small bag of chips work i think...) _________________

play DDR for about an hour each day with fast songs such as healing vision angelic mix and exotic ethnic (maxx 300 if you can) and drink lots of water, if you drink pop, not only will it make you tired faster, but it weakens your body, aids in gaining weight and is the number one cause of pimples. I know a kid who lost 135 pounds playing DDR and thats what he did. _________________

when trying to lose weight the best thing to do is to eat every day but watch what you eat. you gain weight if you dont eat for a couple of days, your body will slow its motabolism which means that the next time you eat you will just take every thing that is in the food, fat. so eat every meal of the day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but careful what you eat _________________

It totally depends on a million things you haven't specified at all.
One. Your weight now. If you currently are underweight, then you're not going to lose weight as easily. If you're extremely underweight, DDR is liable to cause you to *gain* weight. If you're an average weight, DDR may make you lose or gain, depending on other factors. If you're overweight, DDR may help you lose, but at the same time, other elements of your lifestyle are gonna come into play.
Two. Your diet. What you eat now. What you eat while you're trying to lose weight. Diet is vitally important in relation to exercise-- if you DDR an hour a day, but eat totally horrible food, you're liable to not lose, or even gain, weight. At the same time, following unhealthy diets can make you lethargic, and make you not have enough energy to even do cardio.
Which leads me to:
Three. Water. You *will not* lose anything but water weight unless you keep completely hydrated. Your body needs water to break down fats, and fat loss or fat being replaced by muscle is what you're going for, right? You don't just wanna be dehydrated. In fact, if you manage to overwork yourself when you're dehydrated, your body will burn your MUSCLES to make energy, without depleting your fat stores at all. I don't really think that's what you're going for, either.
Four. Your current workout. If you already do cardio for the same amount of time you're planning to do DDR, you have changed basically nothing. In fact, I've heard of a bunch of people who've gained off of DDR-- I can't say that hanging out at arcades really breeds good eating habits, for sure.
Keep in mind most of the people who lose weight off of DDR start off quite overweight-- the average/underweight person is much less likely to have dramatic weightloss with DDR.
Just for your information, these statements are all wrong, misled, retarded, REALLY BAD ADVICE, or inaccurate in some way:

The thing is you really only lose water weight unless you do this everyday. I kind of overdid it once (lost 5 pounds in water) and i got really sick cause i didn't drink. |
(So, if you wanna get REALLY sick, and be dehydrated, and be losing no REAL weight-- just water-- follow his idea.)
Quote: | i lost some weight by doing the not eating diet |
(Unhealthy. Screws with your metabolism like NOTHING else will. You don't want your body to go into starvation mode, which is what it'll do-- your metabolism will slow WAY down, dude.)
Quote: | just not eat two days before the weigh in |
(Err? Again. Not eating = bad. Generally afterwards, you will gain back ALL that you lost, and maybe even more.)
Quote: | If you can't lose weight playing DDR then you aren't going to lose weight going for an 8 mile jog. |
(Technically, wrong. Jogging goes through a greater range of motion than DDR. Jogging also is more constant, and has NO breaks if you make it that way. Running makes you lose weight a lot faster than DDR, from what I've seen.)
Quote: | so a nice diet with enough carbs to keep ya dancing with hardly any calories work (a small bag of chips work i think...) |
(You've got to be kidding. Chips are empty calories-- if someone's trying to lose weight, they'd probably be getting most of their simple sugars (read: short-term energy) from fruits and veggies.)
Quote: | play DDR for about an hour each day with fast songs |
(The breaks between songs make it pointless. Do different cardio if you wanna lose weight. Really and truly.)
Quote: | But you ain't gonna lose much weight by playing Light songs , Standard maybe a little, but Heavy yes Definately |
(Dude. No. It's like between walking and running-- if you walk two miles, it has more benefit than if you run a half-mile. And so with DDR. If you can only play Heavy for twenty minutes, then it's not as likely to do as much for you as playing Light for an hour-- and I haven't even mentioned freestyling yet.)

great advice...
so do you think (stephanie) that if you had a continual song (non-stop) would also help with that? given that you stayed hydrated and ate right? ... i could stand to lew a few lbs myself... i know ddr isnt the BEST way too... but with school and all i dont have much time to hit a gym...
also... is there a non-stop mode on any of the US Ddr mixes? mainly ddrmax... since thats the only one ive got? |

but I think the best thing you could do is go on a low carb diet and drink a lot of water. you can easily lose 5 pounds in a week doing that. as long as you exercise anyways. _________________

Stephanie your advice is well thought out, but you misunderstood what I meant by exercising as much as you possibly can. When I say you should exercise as much as possible. I don't mean 8 hours a day. In fact if you read my post I specifically said at least 30 minutes a day. What I meant by as much as possible is everyday if you can. It's what I do, and it keeps me in shape.
Yes it is true that there are breaks between songs in DDR and there are no breaks in a good jogging session. However DDR can require you to expend more energy you do in jogging in a shorter amount of time. So even though there are breaks; a session of DDR and jogging can be about equal. Also you can always plan ahead of what songs you are going to pick, choose them as fast as possible, and hurry up with the stage. And if you are really good you can play the nonstop mode. |

you don't even need a non-stop mode as long as you pick the next song promptly. Your heart rate can't go down that far in a few seconds. Just keep it in event mode and don't let other people play until you've got you 30 minutes in. |

It depends. If you had it in nonstop workout mode, like was in Konamix and DDRUSA, and is supposed to be in DDRMAX2 for PS2 coming out later this year... then maybe. Nonstops might do it, to a lesser degree, but they're really only four songs long. And then, after them, you get the results screen and all that BS. Other cardio-- treadmills, running around a track, whatever-- are probably more liable to help people be honest with timing cardio.
DDR, you may play forty minutes. Great! But the songs are 1:30ish each, and you can easily take twenty seconds with the results screen, picking a new song, and the game resetting after final stage. So... you lose time. I would try and make sure to stay honest with yourself with that kind of thing-- 'cause it's easy to look at the clock, see an hour's past, and think "Wow! I played DDR an hour!" when really... you end up scrolling through screens around a quarter of the time.
Quote: | given that you stayed hydrated and ate right? ... i could stand to lew a few lbs myself... i know ddr isnt the BEST way too... but with school and all i dont have much time to hit a gym... |
Staying hydrated and eating right are REALLY important, if you want to shed weight. If your diet now is pretty bad, though, you might need to think this out-- stocking up your house with healthy food may take a little effort, but might be worth the effort. Alternately, you can go into it gradually-- like I said before, the little changes get to adding up.
Quote: | also... is there a non-stop mode on any of the US Ddr mixes? mainly ddrmax... since thats the only one ive got? |
DDRMAX has nonstop mode. It's four songs in a row.
It also has workout mode, but the workout mode is not continuous.

True. Drink a lot of water, though-- in fact, you might wanna do some research on low-carbing if you decide to go that route.

Okay, if you meant frequency rather than length, then I'll kind of agree with you. (I kinda think planning to DDR/work-out every day is setting yourself up to fail...)
