To be honest, I don't really know. I just did it just cause it seemed so doable, after I found out what locking is, of course.

Coming from someone who is learning freestyle as well, I'm just gonna post what I've learned. Its not easy! E1.gif But yet there is hope. I hear a lot of people wondering what kind of routine they should make and how they have a hard time putting one together.

I learned the best way is to perfect your dancing style(off the pad) and then apply it to the pad. Most breaker's can bust out the coolest foot work to any song as long as they can catch the beat.
So.. yeah thats my tip. And also stay true to your own style, and don't be afraid of work.
I'm putting in 30 min a day stretching and 1-2 hours breaking/footwork/up rock just to get good at this. E1.gif

Once you get use to freestyling, you'll find what your technique is.

or that you have no technique. As is the case with me. I went to the arcade before to work on a routine for Groove 2001, laughed out of the arcade. Thus endeth my freestyle career.

No, that means you have a bad technique. Make some changes by watching some other routines.

Well gasoline is harmless unless you add me and a way of igniting it.

Having no technique is just sloppy. It's like an handicapped old man trying to walk without a cane. I suggest you to just buy/rent videos of people dancing. Mimic whatever they do in front of a mirror(a long one so you can see your entire body). As long as you think you look good doing continue on from there. Learn basics things like listening to the song and try to do things to fit the song. Also Learn basic steps, dancing has it's foundation from somewhere. For example Marengae(spelling). The Advance dance moves in a couple comes from Jazz. I suggest watching the following people if you want to get better in your technique: Usher, Janet Jackson, Micheal Jackson(His old videos). Have fun

You don't have to walk on it, just put one foot on the monitor and push yourself over the bar, or do a spin.

So, as you can see, Judau is a prime example of what not to do. *class takes notes*

*takes notes* Are flashy little tricks like the aforemention and bar stuff all that important or flow and style should be focused on more? Round these parts basically everyone the cheesy bar flares/knee drop combos... but lack in all other areas. I learn by watching others...but stuff like that discourages me cause IMO I don't a improv or routine comprised just that really counts for much.

In tournaments, I focus one having a few moves in the routine that make the crowd go "WOW" during it. Obviously, kneedrop and bar flares are overdone, so people don't go wow. You need to creative. Usually I'll use a song that have small effects in it (a la Spin the Disc), and do little things to that.

I always watch other routines to get an idea of how they got the crowd going.

True, I do the same. While I think of half the stuff at that moment, there are points in a song where I have something planned. I have never done the same exact routine to a song in practice or performance.

I had a few "creative" moves that I thought they would say "WOW!", but they ended up saying "OW!" instead. biggrin.gif I hurt after that routine....

I'm afraid to take that approach, because knowing me, I might end up copying part of, if not the entirety of someone elses routine. I'd prefer not to be tagged as some kind of copycat or thief...

I'm also a firm believer in the idea that you'll feel a lot better about yourself and your performance if what you did was 100% yours. Even though I didn't place in my first tourney, I was still proud that I went up there with nothing but what was my own. That was satisfying enough for me.

I know that you're all into REALLY competitive competition, and that last statement might not strike the right chord. But it's just what I feel is right for me. I'll almost always be in it for the fun. Sure, I'll be bummed for all of 15 seconds if I don't place or anything, but it still ends up a fun and enlightening exeprience...

So that's my view in a nutshell. I freestyle for the sake of just going up there and hamming it up for the hell of it. And to compete just makes things a little more enjoyable.

...

...

I think I went off on a tangent there....
