do you think you have an advantage in freestyle if you are a hip-hop dancer or a BBOY/GIRL??

any dance style you know puts you at an advantage... not just hip hop or breakin'... i dont see why one would limit it.

You've got a definite advantage, thats if the judges are pro-hip hop and what not. But then again, judges who are bias shouldn't be judges in the first place. Like Liustyle said, any dance style automatically puts you at an advantage, but one who perfects it; moreover, varries it smoothly with other dance styles has a higher advantage. Still there is a contradiction to that, since freestyle also consists of presentation and wow factor. I, myself, am a breaker/hip hop enthusiast...so seeing anyone freestyle to that dance style (or including pop and lock) is sorta like nice eye candy for me. nerd.gif

what i think about freestyling is that this is the most controversial part of any tournament, like when me and my friend did a couple routine and i heard, and don't quote me on this, i heard that 3 of the judges gave us a 0 just for the song. i think that was cruel and shouldn't be tolerated, in my opinion.

anyways back with freestyling tips.....umm....everyone has there own little way of dancing, like if you can do hip-hop/break dance very good stick with that, or if you can do other stuff like nsync/bsb stuff very good, stick with that. everyone has their own little way of dancing and shouldn't change from it. personally i can't hip-hop/break that well, but me can do stuff like, hmmmmmmm.................let's see how can i explain this, i can do something in between hip-hop, not break dance (me can't do those moves yet, lol), and nsync, like getting routines down to the beat.

another good tip in freestyling is try to do moves facing towards the crowd, like spins, or doing parts of the song backwards, if you have it memorized. don't worry if you're hitting the arrows or not, that really doesn't matter cuz in freestyling it's more like showing off of what you have to offer than getting the arrows down. also when there is a gap in between arrows.....don't just stand there do something, run around, throw your hands up in there, clap, yell, or whatever, but never just stand there, try to get the judges attention of you, at whatever costs, well not everything, but ya guys know what i mean.

most importantly......try to do new moves that you haven't seen anywhere before and practice the way you can do your own moves. making something first is original, that's what judges love......something new.

well, hope for the best of ya and gl to yall in the freestyle division in tournys.

peace out

Ha, I've done locking so many times. Its hella fun, but hard to make look good. If not done right, it can look like retarded cheerleading. One thing I have not seen is the harlem shake. I plan on doing it sometime soon when I can get it down. LTR is really good for fsing. The hold arrows give me good time to do my "blow up" type moves.

There are about 7-8 variations for c-walking, so explaining it is useless. Just do a glide like usher and you'll get more props for that because its less played out and harder. I tend to stick with the same style pretty much. Freestyle in Washington isn't that great right now. But I'm holding a tournament in March, so hopefully that will kick fs into gear.

One last thing, what is the biggest annual FS event held in Cali? I'm thinking about flying down there sometime. Peace.

DAMN!

A 7th Mix machine?! Now THAT'S a prize!

Hmmm...This Cyber Beat Nation....are any of the DDR Freestyle forefathers talking about entering Luistyle (read Mel B, Kid Zero, Lil' B, 8-ball, etc.) Are you?

Just curious. But I wanted to bring up a fs topic myself. Do you think guys or have an advantage, or do you think that the ladies inch the judges over to their side more easily?

I mean, I bring this up because Liustyle was robbed when he did his Healing Vision Routine! I forgot who won..but I haven't found anyone that can touch that ('cept like 8-ball, but then their two different styles, so I don't think you can compare) but I think that the ladies got it easier because if they're sexy, then they can "influence" the judges.

That wouldn't bother me, but I'm an up and coming freestyler and the idea that someone can win a fs because of that over a well thought out, or just a well done routine period screws with me.

What do y'all think?

I think they kinda do. Depends on the judges. I have influenced a girl judge before by winking at them during the routine. (I got her number too) You just gotta do a better job.

nopers... i'm not going... too far for my liking... not to mention i haven't spent any time with my g/f, and valentines is the perfect weekend for that.

but i'll be at back2basics in hayward on feb8th... redoing my fremont routine(that i totally f'ed up) to redeem myself - but i'm only performing it as an exhibition.

thanks for the comments DJ Black E1.gif and i must admit... i was disappointed with all that effort i put into that healing vision routine.

Me too. I'm not going either (and I want to). But I think I'll need that weekend to finalize my routines.

General question about freestyling and routines...

How many people out there freestyle and get full combos or close to it? What about the crazy good players that are on the videos... do their routines usually get full combos?

well if you get your routine down perfectly enough then you should be able to get close to a full combo unless you make a couple mistakes or call for something that doesnt hit the arrows....

ANOTHER question = how many tounies that you guys go to have a Real Freestyle section?
and what do you think is harder to win real freestyle or routine freestyle, if in the both sections there are the same amount of people?

kenhigashi - there's really only one person that i know (and that i recall seeing) being able to closely full combo a song while also freestyling with their backs turned to their screen - that person is kyle snyder

the average score that i see that people get are C's, and more D's and B's

dj l3f7 3y3 - i've never been to a complete improv freestyle tournament; although there is one being held this weekend.

it depends on the person... some people are way better improvin', while others are better routine makers.

the hard part of improv shows how quick of a thinker you are and how well you adapt yourself to the song and random steps.

the hard part of a routine freestyle is to memorize the steps along with utilizing a variety of moves throughout the whole song. its hard choreographing because a lot of time and effort is involved (if you want to make a good routine).

ya' know,

that suprises me...and makes me feel pretty good.

In the scrub freestyle "tourney" (couldn't really call it that...it was local) I did a freestyle to long train runnin' and I only missed one step (which means I A'ed it)

I would think that you would probably have an easier time with the songs, Luistyle....getting a higher grade and all. I don't really think that matters though, cause when you can bust out with a routine like era or healing vision...honestly, who cares if you didn't combo it? (but then again, some of those judges...)

But I damn near comboed LTR. 96 steps...and I missed one...

Where's the justice? E7.gif

Edit: Oh yeah...I did it backwards, mirror, dark, hidden. I know the hidden and dark seem to be overkill, but it's a psychological thing E7.gif

First tourney I entered, I missed two arrow while doing my routine mirror/stealth (Byul trick double). Since then, I've learned that sacrificing some arrows can be beneficial.

Oh, I always use 8x mirror dark reverse even though I should use dark stealth reverse to just prevent arrows from flying on the screen.

Yeah i find it best not to focus solely on hitting arrows..then I can concentrate on the routine or if it's an improved one I forget what I'm doing riiight.gif
