A new BNS Extreme dx pad review

The pad is alot bigger than the small cheap 1 so u have to learn the right positions of the arrows. The raised arrows help. u have to put alittle more weight on the pads arrows to make them hold and that has been a problem with freeze arrows during other freeze arrows because when u shift ur weight just a little the wrong way it might take of the freeze affect.
It has made my skills alot better and i never miss a arrow now. The pad hardly moves at all on easy manic songs. over all the blue section is the problem part of the pad and could probly be fix with a chair mat. I love this pad it is alot better than my old cheap 5 buck pads!

No no, I mean actually go into the pad (open it up, whatever) and mess with the circuitry/wiring/whatever and have the arrows register as the buttons. In other words...mess around with the pad itself and have it so that, when I push Up, the controller thinks I'm pushing X. I know I can use the X, O, Triangle, and Square...I've done that already. It's painful. I just figured that, since this is the soft pad thread and I'm talking about messing with my soft pad...

Until tonight, I had my DPR2 simply mounted onto wood, but I started to have some problems. The pad never really lay flat on the plywood, due to the bottom layer of outer foam. The outer foam is about half a centimeter thick, and it's a bit too large for the pad. The reason it's too large is so that you're able to fold the pad up. The problems I was having were because the extra foam would bunch up underneath the pad and sometimes cause buttons to trigger erroneously.

What I did to fix it:

I pulled the pad off the plywood, and threw out the old duct tape that held it there, then I CUT OFF that bottom layer of foam. Using some good scissors, I cut around the edge of the grey foam, being careful to only cut that layer, and cutting as close to the green seam as possible without destroying the seam. I kept on cutting, and traced around the blue plastic control box until the whole gray sheet separated. (During this whole process, I learned a LOT about soft pads, too). I used a few bits of duct tape here and there to attach the now-exposed sheet of cellophane more securely to the green strip.

The grey foam is in excellent condition and i'm saving it in a safe place.

To re-assemble the pad, I just flipped it back over, stretched it tight (it's now VERY flat) and duct taped all the way around the edges again, securing it immovably to the particle board.

Results:

It responds perfectly, doesn't ghost, doesn't miss steps, and doesn't trigger anything when I stand in the middle anymore. My only concern is that without that foam layer, the greater impacts of steps will eventually wear out the white foam-with-holes layer, causing ghost steps. If that happens, i may consider cutting my own (large) holes in the gray layer, and re-inserting it in place of the white foam-with-holes layer. The holes in the white layer are a bit smaller than a dime, which seems too small for good sensitivity.

If it works well, I may buy a second pad and perform a similar thing, take a bunch of pictures, and turn this into a real mod guide.

Well, my birthday is coming up, February 22nd. I am going to buy DDRMAX for my PS2, and I was wondering what kind of soft pad would be good for my budget. I can spend up to about 100 dollars and I would be using it alot. I know that there have been a lot of questions like this, please forgive me for not wanting to search through.

Iv'e a question.
I'm trying to avoid buying anything expensive, and I hear some mods can really boost a cheap pads durability. For some people, they havent even begun to show signs of damage ever since modded. Can anyone post a thorough guide to modding a "cheapo" pad. Such as the madcatz ones that are like 20$???

ChIlDAnArChY: Check the first post for mods. In particular check Tommy Gun's mod. Highly detailed with lots of pics, plus it looks hella cool too.

KiCKi N iCK: 2 DPR2 or Mad Katz pads (found in GameStop, EB, and the like), mod them with the Tommy Gun mod and voila.

This is the mod I'm talking about. Also if you don't like Mad Katz, DPR2 has a pad that looks closer to the official Konami pad.

Hey has anybody tried using the plywood mod combined with the chairmat mod on an Ignition DX Style pad? Because I would really really like to know how well it works and the durability, response, etc...

Second, How thick should the plywood (Or whatever wood I am using) be?

Lastly, I need to know where u can get the velcro so I can attach the wood to the pad...

Summary: everyone sells "deluxe" pads and they're all pretty much the same. What seperates a crappy soft pad from a great soft pad is THE INSERT. The BNS Xtreme insert is very, very good to the point that you may not need to do a wood mount or a chairmat insert!! That is amazing..

And for the record-- contrary to Ke6dRt's opinion that "nobody should order pads online" I have always ordered my DDR stuff online (from cyphergames and BNS) and I have consistently gotten excellent, timely service AND very good deals to boot!

my roommate and i have the cyphergames ignition pads, and they worked relatively well at first, however one of the pads is starting to malfunction. one of two things happens: when you step on the left arrow of the pad, either the led light at the top lights up dimly then goes out almost immediately, or the led light turns on and off crisply as it would if it were functioning normally. in both cases, 80% of the time, this results in a miss. i guess this is what people refer as a ghost step? anyway, i don't know if modding will help in this situation, since it seems to be something internal to the pad.. maybe with wiring.. i really am not sure. any suggestions?

Can somebody please explain in good detail what this "Chair Mod" is? From what I gather, you buy a chair mat from Office Max or some place, and then stick it under your pad and you're done....

But I'm very confused...

These chair mats... are they the ones with the little spikes on the bottom? Do you just simply lay your game pad on top of this mat and you're set, or do you have to cut open your pad?

Today I bought myself two 39x35 in pieces of particle board and I'm thinking I can do the chair mod and then put it on top of this piece of wood.

I did look through all the threads about this, but nobody seems to specifically cover how the chair mod is done (*exactly*).

Can anybody please help?
