I noticed the faq mentiones bandwitch a lot, maybe you could add in what bandwith is and why this site is so concerned about it being wasted.

On topic: I think you should add something to the FAQ to the extent of not having 2 people constantly flood a topic, just responding to each other. Either get an instant messaging system, or at the very LEAST, use their PM box to talk to each other. disturb.gif

Edit: Also, try to emphasise the search feature a LOT more, and (IMO) you should give out warning points to ANYBODY who posts anything like "I posted this topic because I didn't have time to read a 2342749 page thread because I'm not lifeless like all of you LOlOLZOLZZ!1!1!elvn" or anything like that. Lately I've seen a LOT of topics like that asking about soft pads in the DDR @ Home forum, and even with the creating a new topic, I still think people should be warned NOT to do this.

O.K., I just wondering. If a member was trying to create a topic on a subject but there was already a topic that is on the same subject but it is two months old. Should that person create a new topic or just post on the topic that is two months old? E19.gif

If this member posts a good response in the old thread(I'm assuming this member is you), then it's fine. But if it's just a crappy post-whore response, that's a no-no.

I would think it would be better to re-open the old thread. By creating two threads, you A) Add yet another thread to the IMMENSE list of threads this site already has for members to sift through, and B) Effectively deal the final blow to the old thread - which probably still has relevant posts in it.

If the topics both deal with the exact same subject, why not bump it (with your new, original idea of course) and give the thread some life? Then people who've missed it can get all the older ideas as well, rather than start from scratch.

Personally, I'd rather read all about it in one thread.

(edit) Now that I'm thinking about it, might want to change the FAQ to reflect that you apparently can't delete your own posts, even before someone's read them... unless someone read my double post REALLY quickly. (Does reading your own post prevent you from deleting it?)

Conine, you can't delete your own posts, period. Unless you count being able to edit it down to nothing. Technically, the post is still there, though.

Now here's an interesting thought I just had.

What kind of disk space/overhead versus processing times tradeoffs would you have if you added a pre-emptive search to all New Thread postings to check for existing threads with the same title? If a hit is found, then an intermediate page would be loaded that says "Your thread probably contains similar questions/information to what's available in this thread. You should check it first before posting this new thread." and then offers you an option to continue posting the new thread anyway, or to open the old thread in a new window. Anyone who blatantly ignored this option (IE - reposting a thread titled "DDR FOR XBOX") would qualify for a warn for an unnecessary new thread, when he/she practically had the old information shoved in his/her face.

Just a thought...it's probably not worth the trouble of implementing...

I was a plain old mod a little while ago. But it's not really like two distinct levels or anything. Admins just do a little more of the...umm....administrative stuff. erm.gif Coding or dealing with bans and things like that.

Apparently advertising is not allowed on this site, yet there is nothing in the FAQ about advertising. Why? E19.gif
