Ok you want some tips then thats what I am here for.
One move that I do that makes you feel comfortable is sliding. Always slide on the dance pad for it will make you look cool.
The next move I do is the knee drop. The knee drop is just cool.Don't instantly just drop on your knee though for you will mess up your stuff.
If your going to freestyle the hardest thing I think to do is finding something to do with your arms and hands to make you look cool. One guy actually keeps his hands opens and swings his arms wildly. IF you do that I guarantee people will think you are gay.
Get accustomed to doing tricks on songs and to the steps. IF you do that it will be a lot easier to be comfortable.
Do not tense up nor be afraid. If people start laughing then just ignore them. One thing I usually do when they laugh is do a very hard song that is crazy. Do that and if they still laugh go to them and ask them if they would like to join. If they say no and still laugh say "Thats what I thought" and walk away.
Keep your shoulders relaxed when you are nervous. If you keep your shoulders untense then you will still look good no matter how you feel.
Ps:Take a towel and bottle water with you. The towel is for your sweat nobody likes to see you sweat while dancing. Plus it makes you stink. Just a tip.
To freestyle do things with the bar. It is a very important factor in dancing to DDR.Try going under the bar or going around the bar.
Another tip when dancing to DDR is try turning around and looking at the audience. Make sure though that you know the steps. One time I actually had turned around and started missing a whole bunch without noticing.
Well thats all the tips I can give you. The rest are secrets for me to use. Hope this helps!!! |

i'm going to have to disagree with "always sliding because it'll make you look cool" if it's something i've seen, sliding has died down, as all the "pros, vets, and what not focused fs'ers" focus more on variations of fancy footwork while simultaneously working on their upper body.
hopefully the kneedrops you're talking about aren't the ones seen excessively on dynamite rave and luv2me routines... for those will be scoffed down upon heavily. _________________

I'm really sorry for the caps on this post, but I feel it has to be said:
DON'T KNEEDROP OR HANDPLANT CONSISTENTLY! TRUST ME, YOU WILL BE DOING YOUR KNEES AND WRISTS A FAVOR!!!
*ahem* Thank you. |

I love freestylin, I'm a better freestyler than PA I think. I just need to get some ideas. I'm gonna be in a freestyle tourney in San Antonio in December. I need some ideas so I can have a chance of winning. I need some power moves to use. Can anyone post some videos? I've seen the vids on this site, but is there anything better? _________________

It's actually quite funny how inter-related all dance really is. Like some of you have pointed out freestyle is improvising on the fly and choregraphy is developing, practicing, and ultimatley performing a routine.
I have danced swing social (as in no improv), and improv. I have seen many people dance swing to choregraphed routines. Like some of the videos here of routines they were downright amazing. You can tell how much work someone puts into a routine.
I myself have never danced to a choregraphed routine in DDR or away from it. What I can tell you is that the most fun I've ever had dancing anywhere is when I am allowed to improv on the fly. Mixing swing and kung-fu? And never missing a beat...that is when dance becomes the most fun for me.
So to sum it up I feel choregraphed routines are more for an audience. Improv or freestyle I feel is more for the performer. But of course either can be for the perfprmer of the audience.
Dance on...
CourtJester
And the most important thing to remember when dancing!!!
The more worried you are about how cool you look the dumber you wind up looking! Just dance and have fun! |

Im not..well..I am..or am I??
ROFL, Um, Okay IM pretty much in the middle of a tech and a feestlyer player..although i lean more towards freestlye. Buh eh..hmm I used to dance before i began playing DDr..that helped, so actually dancing without arrows or anything helps..its helps with making up moves as we;; as other things like...body movement. But hmm, do knee drops and hand plants all the time, but i always go backwards into my hand plants or drop to the side..my knee drops are always forward or ill doit dgoing in a circle sometimes....hmm..
All i can really say is when u freesyle, have fun...smile..laug.. make a fool of yourself or make a orderly rountine..i actually improv more..but eh...lets just say freestlye is free-stlye..ur allowed to make up your own moves, have fun with it...there are no limitations |

I thought handstands were pretty cool, I can understand stuff like kneedrops and handslams is out but perfected handstands... hmm... oh well
my moves so far handstands, a break dance move on the knees that keeps you spinning around hitting those arrows, drunken kung fu and such.
My tip is.. download (and delete before 24 hour has passed so you won't be in copyright trouble) as much as you can. Videos by artists like Britney Spears, N-Sync and Backstreet boys have a lot of moves and coordination in them.
Btw, I'm kinda surprised that people FS on basic songs.. I have been doing it on standard or difficult... then again, I am a big e-rotic fan and those aren't ultra hard on s/d mode. _________________

someone just posted saying something like:
if you're worried about looking good, you will screw up.
which is very true.
when i first started clubbin, i was so worried about looking like a dumbass in front of everyone. few drinks later i didn't care anymore, and noticed i liked to dance, alot... so freestyle started comin more naturally on ddr.
practice on DWI or some bootleg thing at home if you want to memorize for choreographing(sp?), works really well.
practice moving your whole body, like doing poses or arm movement stuff, during catas or any other hard song... just get used to moving more naturally while hitting arrows.
nothing looks better than just looking like you're not hitting arrows, just dancing.
dance, dance, too much booty in the pants. _________________

Hello!
I'm new here, and I couldn't help but notice this post. I started freestyling without even realizing it! I don't do knee drops or anything like that, but the way I move during certain songs was just something I always do when I dance! My personal fave FS song is "Get Me In Your Sight" (5th Mix). I get a rhythm in my hips and shake them and my shoulders around the D L D L.... part. I also do slides on various parts, especailly toward the end with the double steps in the same direction.
I especially like doing that when I have an audience! |
