freestyle is harder than it looks.

first: do handplants and kneedrops for a week, get used to the stage

when you want to make a routine:listen to a song a bajillion times, get a whole bunch of moves planned, choreograph it, get real familiar w/ the steps.

you can't tell someone how to freestyle btw, the whole thing is too broad to define. don't handplant, kneedrop, matrix walk, or damage the machine. if whatever you do is entertaining, it's great freestyle.

you can't tip comedy routines.
dance routines however should be clean and look real refined. if you sit and do a bunch of jumping around the pad you'll look like a idiot.

listen to the music at your house. while this is playing start tapping your foot to the beat. as you listen farther into the songs just move your body
and you'll come up with a ruitine

Justin Bailey wrote:
The move I'm currently working on (only one success at this one so far) is to do a 270-degree spin onto an UD from a LR position.

Justin -- I have some tips for practice on the 270:
Put an extra step in between the UD LR steps... like UD mid LR. Spin 135 degrees (half of 270) in a direction, a foot in the middle, then another 135. When you master this 2 stepper, then go onto the 270.

I do the 270's in Pump It Up a lot -- where you can do the Caution Drop:
73 5 91 5 73 5 91 5 -- Feet out, spin 135, Feet in, 135, out, 135, in 135... etc.
Then I did 270's when there were just the corners being hit:
73 91 73 91
In DDR it's the same concept, except a tighter spin. Currently when I do it, my feet lead my body so when I spin my body is leaning a little back. I think this is cause I'm reaching for the pads with my feet...
Anyway good luck. Sorry for any typos just tried the 270 jumps and got a little carried away. Dizzy.

I agree, hand plants do hurt really bad. knee plants dont hurt as bad but they dont look so neat when all of a sudden you just pop down on your knee either. So basically if your gonna do a knee plant, you have to be able to make a handplant look cool before it or something.

Hmm Freestyling, 1st thing needed is to learn how to dance. Hand plants and knee drops are ok when used sparingly. If you can dance to the dong you can create a routine. Also choose songs you like, not just something that will impress other people. Watch music vids with heavy dance choreography. Maybe you'll learn something from it.

no, you don't have to start with those... i've known plenty of people who have never done a kneedrop/handplant in their life and their freestyling is exceptional. Who knows, if they start, they may never break that habit.

If I could give you one hint, its to do the slide. It links steps together so smootly and it makes you look like you really know how to play...even if you dont like me! E4.gif Slide everywhere. Thats all I can say. Plus...dance to the song. If you have evey played Drop the Bomb on maniac... you'll know what I mean.

Use the song effects in the song. People don't realize how much that helps. Be creative with that.

yeah, i generally agree with most of what y'all have said here, with a few exceptions...

the days of trick ddr are over, imo.

Pick a song you like, and that has a steady stream of arrows. Luv to me Maniac Little has a huge gap in it, which is good for a silly routine that you're just doing for fun, but not a serious freestyle. I mean, how impressive is it to do a flare with no arrows? It's not DDR at that point.

i think it's more than acceptable to have a few purposeless steps here and there as filler material to keep the groove going. certainly the luv to me case is sort of an extreme one, but if you watch any decent freestyle video where you can see the screen, i'm sure you'll notice that not all of the dancer's steps hit an arrow (and likely, a substantial number may not). btw, a flare is still a flare. i can't do one. =) ...it's impressive to me in or out of the context of ddr, but that's just me...

Miss Toy wrote:
Memorize your song, your moves, and the arrows that go with it.

tell me if i'm way off base here, but i think "freestyle" as we know it in the world of ddr is something of a misnomer. what i mean is that probably every "freestyle" routine and video i've ever seen was actually coreographed. i'm certainly no authority on ddr (in fact, i suck pretty badly at it), but to me (and again, tell me if i'm wrong), true "freestyle" is when you improvise on the fly. when i make my lame attempts to freestyle, i always put it on shuffle and just do my best to string together moves from my extensive repertoire of ddr dance moves (all 2 of 'em)... sometimes it turns out okay, most of the time it doesn't, but the point is that i'm doing it on the fly. what do y'all think... is "freestyle" a poorly chosen term for what we do?

Im sorry I sound like noobie but, when it comes to freestyle I'm kinda like a wounded duck, Ive had people comment that "sure he can play well but he has no style!" I hear a million people say dont Matrix Walk, then ive heard a few people say Matrix Walk is cool, WTF IS MATRIX WALK??? It would really help if somebody could post a guide on the freestyling lingo, most commonly used tricks' names for the freestyle illeterate, Thanks a mil.

One more thing, has Do Me HIGEO Mix Baisic been used to many times for freestyle? I was thinking of starting freestyle with that, or paranoia rebirth trick little. Any suggestions?

I used to knee drop, bar hop, and handplant but I figured that doing too much of that would screw up my freestyle. I recorded myself doing that, and I thought to myself "what in the blue hell was that ?". So then one day, I looked through the internet following all sorts of advice from other DDR freestylers (mostly Mel B). Then I watched some of Kid Zero's videos and saw how his footwork was done. I decided not to copy it, but rather emulate it with my own style and it worked. I practiced all day and all night to improve my footwork and when I stepped up to the DDR 4th Mix Plus machine at Boomers, I started busting out my new style and all my friends were impressed. No hard stomping or knee dropping for me. Now it's all about dance routines and raving to me. Today, I'm watching other K-pop music videos on Music Video Heaven to sharpen up my freestyle. I kept watching and I mimicked their style of dance, and hey...it worked ! Sorry about the long story, but I feel like discussing this to others about freestyling.

Hey ! Any interesting dance videos that I can buy or rent other than that Darin's Dance Grooves crap ? I need more variety in my style !

I agree with (miss toy) the fact that most "freestyle" as we know it is choreographed in the DDR world. Point blank, a routine is just choreography. Freestyle is exactly "on the fly" so to speak, and is thus true freestyle. Going to back to other things, when it comes to freestyle, if it looks good, do it. Just so you know, it's my contention that as long as you know what you're doing, go for it, in regard to things like matrix walks(Walk across the machine screen, or more properly, around it). I have an entire repertoire of moves that involve jumping off the machine to do skater styled stalls and stuff, but you won't catch me jumping on say, the screen. Be smart about stuff like that. You can even break the machine pad on a knee drop for cryin out loud. Hand plants, knee drops, overdone? yup. But than again so is the everpresent foot slide. It's all about how you link it together and get your groovethang going E1.gif .

ahhh... but the choreographing is still pretty kool. but when you can start doing stuff on the run, then that's tight. for instance, going to a tourney and go to where a bunch of competitors play, bust out something choreographed. then, when it's time for your routine, make up something sick. i'm working on a handstand and a cartwheel on Luv To Me AMD mix. i also gotta figure out how to get a good dance routine for the beginning. this is just on basic. also... how do u do a flare? i also wanna take a tap dancing class and use some tap dancing n my style. just think to yourself what you can do. i'm doing a B4U routine with spins. also kneedrops can look kool if u use it like 1 time n a routine. more than that and its annoying. i personally think that using 1 move or move sequence more than once is kinda stupid. but hey thats me. hmmmmm... hey what would a routine with a basketball be like? doing crossovers n stuff... and actually using the ball to hit the arrows. hmmmm... ooooh... a pogo stick routine... just ideas man... a HEELY ROUTINE!!!! yesssss... i gotta get some heelies. once i do it'll look sweet.

to stop myself getting bored while learning how to read half steps (still learning but im working through the 5 footers) i decided to improve my technique.

i now no longer dance like a pixie!

i just kinda walk all over the pad and when theres a jump i just kind of... hop.
its not proper freestyle but i feel more confident.

but we do a little tribal dancey thing when we do afronova promeval!
