For the begining just listen to the "melody" of the music before the steps come up... thats the pattern for the first couple sets of funky beat steps in there before the guy starts his little "techno and rave" lyrics. Works for me. _________________

I started playing DDR a week ago but I am progressing well. I remember the time I couldn't even beat a one footer Now a week later I can pass all songs and have a routine in which I might use in a tournment. Can't wait till Max comes out though. Oh and I'm a new to the boards but that don't matter
|

i do the combos below by sliding. in the r,d,l,u for example, i do the right arrow with the right foot, down arrow with the left, then slide the left foot to the left arrow and then hit the up arrow with the right foot. if it repeats (like in a few songs it does), you'll need to slide your right foot from the up arrow to the right arrow to start off again.
you can see which sliding method works best for you, if you get this down it will help you with mainiac songs like Saints, Healing Vision Ang. Mix, Afronova Primeval.
a couple of easier songs to practice this on are Have You Never Been Mellow Maniac and Drop the Bomb Trick i think has this at the end as well. Another good practice is playing shuffle on any maniac songs. when you pick shuffle it uses the combos you mentioned alot.

l,u,r,d or r,u,l,d
and r,d,l,u or l,d,r,u
I just never seem to get the footing right.. I worked out that if you start with the foot that you're supposed to, you'd end up facing away from the screen, which is really awkward for the next set of arrows. short of memorising the next pattern to right yourself, what can I do? :baffled: |

I always thought Konami had the steps set out so you -never- had to step on different arrows with the same foot.. I'll admit, sometimes it's easier to slide than to turn, but isn't it possible to do ruld and steps like that without sliding? _________________

Hey,
I am one of those people who can pass up to basic, easy four foot. I tried a one foot song on trick and failed. I understand eighth notes, rhythms and arrow-reading, how do i get up to higher basic levels and trick? (This is on third mix, by the way) _________________

dynamite2u...on afronova u have to turn ur body into some positions that will feel awkward at first, but you'll get used to them. On a few occasions u have to turn so that ur back is almost facing the screen, with your head turned to the screen. If u know the steps really well, u could probably turn without even looking at the screen. (If u need a better explanation u can im me at freshnclean2002 and ill break it down for u) On dynamite rave go into training mode and turn the assist on so that u can hear the track and handclap. If u listen to it, u will hear the pattern that repeats throughout the song. I actually had the exact same problems as u, and just practiced on my home system a whole lot and spent a ton of money at the arcade. Keep steppin and pretty soon you'll be wowing ppl in the arcade with ur cata skillz.
|

Well i hope i my advice helps someone out there.
Just remember to listen to the beat and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE |
It's music, not musik. You mispelled it 6 times.
Anyway, I remember when the best I could do were 5-footers. There was a guy I played with at the arcade who played verses with me, and we let each other choose the songs. He was way better than me, but I thought he was really cool because he used a lot of body language instead of talking.
Well, months later I found out the guy was deaf. Amazing, isn't it?! I can't imagine off-beat steps or eigth notes alone without beaing able to hear them. Yeah, 16th notes must be even harder, but how in the world would you do 12th notes?! It's not a bass-beat. One of my friends pointed out that even if you can't hear, you can still feel the physical vibration of the bass, but you still wouldn't be able to do 12th notes (like in "El Ritimo Tropical" on Maniac).
A while back one of my fr-... em.. aquaintences said that this guy challenged him to play with the music off. My aquaintence still won, but it was really really really hard.
So, in conclusion, if you can read the arrows, but you can't get the beat, becase you don't think the music goes along with steps ("Trip Machine", "Gratuistic Cyber", etc.), try playing with the volume off. _________________

What I do mainly on maniac songs, I turn my body around as much as possible, not to waste as much stamina as I can, but to hit the arrows without hurting myself. For example, Dead End on maniac keeps you turning a whole lot. Just don't turn around so much that you will collapse at the end of a song.
As a starter for maniacs on double pads, try .59. My cousin and I call it the "funny dance" because you always move around both pads. |

when i started i played by myself for about 2 monthes till i could pass catas, but i didnt really learn how to do turns and spins and stuff like that until i started going to arcades and i met some nice people who were better than me. after a couple weeks of playing with them, instead of barely passin catas with a D, i was passin them with Bs and higher. i strongly suggest you find someone to play with who is better than you and just watch them/play with them. you'll learn fast. |

Ack.... back again... I figured i'd finish this before going to work....
(First off.... Luv to me is an 8, not cata.... gomen ne)
Starting at #4 I think....
4. Read Ahead/Think Ahead - THIS IS IMPORTANT especially for freestylers or future freestylers. Lol. Anyway, this concept will help you in any game that you play. For example, when people ask me, how to get good at Smash Bros M. (for those of you that play it) I tell them that the secret is just to think ahead. You have to think about what your opponent is going to do, you have to have a feel for the future. Same thing in DDR, but just in a different type of game. In DDR, you want to read a whole page of arrows at a time. This way, your mind has the time to process it, then your feet can follow. For example, you read the whole screen and see the sequence up, right, down, left, up - well.... I see spin instead.
Once you master this, you'll have the joy of someone telling you that you were great, and you can say "I've never played that song before". And if you're planning on playing SSR, this helps you to not get your feet tangled.
5. Have Fun. If you're not having fun, then why are you wasting 1 dollar for three tracks?
6. If you have DDR at home, play on the controller. First you have to learn how to read the arrows. There is no way for you to beat any song without being able to read arrows. Train your mind first, your feet will come in time.
7. Listen to the beat. Duh... its a dance game. I can't tell you how many times i've seen nb's trying to match the arrows. You're not going to beat Graduistic Cyber by matching arrows. You have to be aware that music, is really a layer of different beats. When you play a song for the first time, you really need to listen to all the different beats. For example, did you notice the bell chimes in the background of dynamite rave? The obvious beat is not always what the steps are alligned with, especially in SSR modes. The beat can be with the lyrics, the guitar, the drums, it can be anything that composes that song.
8. Train/Play with other people- It'll make it easier, trust me, and a lot more fun.
9. Don't drain all your energy- Pace yourselves. If you know you have low stamina, dont play Dead End first track.
10. and Finally... know your machine location. Know if there are any problems with buttons, the loudness of the machine, the screen discoloration, the machine's 1-8 level, and the pad's security (Lol.... this is important... dont get hurt bar flaring.....you'll end up with a huge bruise that turns your whole leg purple) some pads are on wheels (I dont know why) shake the pad before you play on it, and lastly, figure all these things out by watching people play first.
Well that ends everything I know.... Go out there and play DDR _________________

I have problems with 2 of your tips:
2. Don't Give Up
It's not that most ppl give up, most ppl just run out of stamina. When I was trying to do Dead End cata and I would always run out of energy and fail even though I had a full bar when I quit. ppl would be raggin' on me to finish the damn song... Once I decided I wouldn't be a quitter and finish the song... And right after where I would have normally stopped, I started to fail, hit one foot on the other, and fell down, even though I by no means trippedl I just didn't have the energy to move my leg to stop my fall. So shame on you ppl for pressuring ppl like me.
9. Don't drain all your energy
Aside from being secretly condraticory to #2, this is a falsity. People play hard songs last because they want to make sure they get all four songs. A long time alone on a machine gave me the chance to discover that you will always have to most time to rest before your first song, so it will be the best. I have plenty of songs I can only pass if I play them first. Don't worry about having to be warmed up. After 1 or 2 games, even if there are a few games before you can play again, your body will be plenty warmed up for the challenge.
Health experts reccomend a warmup, workout, cooldown method, with the workout starting with the most intensity and moving downward. This is healthier for the body, and the body can withstand longer/more intense activity when you do this.
I play a really hard song I know I can beat 1st, then work my way down, then on the last song I play a song I cannot usually beat, just for the practice. |

Ok, for Boom Boom Dollar (K.O.G.G 3 Mix I hope you're talking about) on trick, you just have to do a simple move. Turn your body around left or right. Make sure the dominant foot will be the one moving (for example, if your left foot is dominant, turn right. I'm ambedexrous so it doesn't matter where I go.). Now, keep your non-dominant foot on the down arrow (in the combo for l, d, r, d, l) and move the dominant foor up and down. Do this for the other combo facing the same direction because your feet may get tired. That sucks. Anyway, dont be an idiot and run around the pad (I have seen someone do that, I wanted to put barriers around the pad because he looked like he was falling off). Well that's all I have to say. |
