Hiya,

Kay, tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't STYLE important in DDR??? Geez, kay, look..... Say you've got one person who hits all the arrows and passes a song with an A, jus lookin at the screen and stompin... coo, right? How about someone who misses some arrows but still passes with style?? My assumption is that everyone here'll say style is definitely the way to go...

My problem today... well it's about the 3rd time I've played on an actual arcade DDR machine... and I saw other people playing (for the first time)... and they were all into it... and that was cool and all, cause they got just about all the arrows... but there was no style whatsoever! I go up there and do mah thing... and it's this weird rush... being in front of a crowd... but this one girl who was playing earlier comes to me mid-song, commenting (dissenting) that I was playing on Soft (DDR 3rd Mix, Korean 2nd Ver)... and that I couldn't play medium. She told me to pick Paranoia Rebirth..... and, well, I failed..... hey... everyone does, right? Plus I don't know ANY of the 3rd mix Korean songs.... so I basically freestyled everything... pretty well, I might add... oh ya, it was mah 3rd song.

I got mad, cause she heckled me for quite a bit after that... and ya, sure, she's new at it too... never played trick before... and that was coo.. but to completely bash what I did up there.. well dat wasn't coo... but toleration, ya know.. she WAS 8 months pregnant... and still managing to play on Medium... some fast song... but refusing to style... meh.

Kay, I just need some opinions on my rant. I was pretty darn proud of myself... being in front of people playing DDR is sooo much different from performing in front of a crowd in, say, martial arts...

By the way... I love "Face" by NRG on that game... the first NRG song I heard was pre-ddr... (before I personally heard about it) and I loved it..... sounds a bit like Face, actually... the song was called "Messenger". Ohhhhhhhh I love Korean music... check out H.O.T. if you like NRG..... it stands for High Five of Teenagers... particularly Korean Pride... hehe..

Anyway, thanks a lot!

I got one main thing to say:

Pregnant women are not supposed to play DDR. You probably should have stopped her from playing.

People can play anyway they want I think. It doesn't need style.

I disagree.

I know of one person back in Colorado who I have watched NUMEROUS times play songs, attempt to freestyle, and barely pass the song. In some cases, he would have a friend play alongside him who would pass the song for him while he "freestyled." The funny thing was, his freestyle doesn't even look good. So he looks like a fool while failing.

Not only is style completely subjective, therefore making it difficult to say that someone has style while playing, but any person can go up there and look good dancing while being unable to pass the song. If you want to do that, don't spend money on the machine, just get a boombox with the songs and dance to it. In the end, it'll be a whole lot cheaper.

I personally have more respect for someone that is able to AAA/SSS a song while freestyling than someone who just freestyles and barely passes the song. The person who AAA'ed it not only has the style (well, maybe) but they also have the technical side, and the knowledge of the song. Someone who just goes up there and freestyles and has a red bar just looks like someone who doens't know how to play the game.

Spike is 200% right on this. Actually, I think the most important thing is to try and pass the song. Yeah, some people don't have a lot of style (anything over 5th or 6th level, fuhgeddaboutit!) but they can play the game and get a AA or AAA and that list is constantly growing. I've gotten a lot of compliments not freestyling but being able to just AA 6th and 7th level songs. That really works much better than someone who can freestyle their pants off but has to be bailed out by the person in the other player's slot? How Cool is it to have that bright white letter E standing over you? The other thing that people are forgetting is just to have fun while you're playing!

Hiya,

Wow. That sure took my by surprise..... ya see, here on the east coast, I guess I don't see anyone play ddr... so all I got to watch were the tournament vids on this site. :P Tho I personally think it's the coolest thing in the world to have both a full bar and style... I'd give precedence to style over a bar, and a pass over style. :P I suppose the way you guys're putting it tho..... I might have to change my point of view... tho I'd like more opinions first? Thanks a lot!

The only thing I hate watching are:
Little kids just stomping on the pads
People who hold on to the bar for more than a second (it's just there to help you regain your balance, not to bar hug)
People (usually girls) who wear high heels on ddr. The poor buttons are being tortured with those heels hitting them.

Everything else I'm fine with. And I think it's more impressive to get a higher ranking than to freestyle, since freestyling to me looks... well kinda queer (strange).

[Excessive quoting removed by Spike]
Im gonna have to agree sorta i mean if you see someone who freestyles but fails the song thats just kind of dumb. I havent really seen anyone that looks good freestyling get all the steps and plus im like the only freestyler where i live everyone just plays SSR and says i suck but i have the high score on almost every non stop mix they just dont get it. I just think freestyling is funner nerd.gif

Freestyle is nice if you feel like putting on a show, but I don't think anyone would complain about seeing an A/AA/AAA score from someone you just played an S4R-cata or double cata.

Style is nice, but you average lay-person crowd is also easily impressed by really fast feet.

Each has style a place. Some freestyle, some Perfect Attack, some do both, and others just play the game. Live and let die: as long as people are putting money into the machine, it's going to trickle back to konami who will make another version for us, and that's a "good thing".

As an experienced DDR player, I personally like to see someone freestyle rather than hit buttons on the floor. But many audiences never saw the game and amazed by quick feet or the style. So everytime I go on the machine I do both the scoring and a freestyle. First I freestlye on some 5 feet basic song and do a lot of arm movements and other things the new audiences never saw before like knee drops or hand plants and lots of slides. Then I do another freestlye on a 6 feet maniac song. And for the last song I do a cata song on sudden. Either way, the audience will be amazed.

Hiya,

Thanks a lot for your reply... I was just thinking about doing the same thing... switching between freestyle and gettin A's (hopefully) after each song..... question, tho...... what's a cata? :P Have mercy on this east coaster...

Style is what you make it, although personally I have more respect for people who can style a song good. Maybe it's just because I've seen way too many PA'ers in my time E15.gif .

Why is everyone so obsessed with what other people are doing? Some people like to freestyle, some like to perfect attack, some just want a workout, some are killing time waiting for a movie, whatever. Who cares? Do what you want, let others do what they want. It's that simple.

If it really bothers you, play at another arcade or just play at home.

It's a game. You get points for hitting the arrows perfectly. All else is irrelevant to the machine. The machine cannot see you, nor can the machine think, "Ooh, this guy's kicking some ass in the freestyle department."

Style is for you and your audience. It matters not to DDR. To paraphrase someone, "You can make a really awesome routine on a Stairmaster, but it's still just a Stairmaster."

Oh, and not knowing a song is no excuse for failing it.

People who AAA songs and just look average playing > People who freestyle a song by flailing the arms and legs and have their gauge in the Danger zone for 95% of the song
