Does anyone know what the difference is between the BNS DX and NX pads, besides the type of the main foam insert? Are the small foam inserts under each arrow the same for DX and NX?

You may find that the pad's rubbery bottom keeps it in place well enough on your rug.

If it doesn't, you can tape the pad down to a board - either a piece of plywood with flexible spiky vinyl car ...

Be careful with aluminum foil, because it can deform and hold a shape. You might try using double-sided tape to keep the foil flat against the circuit layer.

It still could be the cable. There is more than one wire in the cable.

If you have an old dead soft pad, just swap the entire controller & cable.

Depends on your tastes I guess. I prefer the soft pad with hard foam over any hard pad. I like to play in socks.
