I took out that crappy piece of foam and put in plywood instead. Now I have no phantom stepping. ( I made sure it was sanded REALLY well so it was smooth.)

Ok I found this old piece of plywood in the garage. I simply took my foam from the pad, put it on the wood, traced the outline onto the wood, cut it out, sanded EVERYTHING well so it had no splinters, ...
